I've got an RS8 chainset running 1x10 but can you just fit 10 speed rings and run it as 2x10? Thinking of 24/38T XT rings.
I'm not sure whether 2x10 rings would sit on the right chainline
Anyone got any experience?
Don't want to buy a new XT chainset

Cheers

I've recently changed from the old XC Duo (3 arm inner ring formed the spider for the outer ring to mount onto) to the newer 4-arm design specifically designed for 2x9 or 2x10 and it works great. Significantly stiffer than the old design, although probably a fraction heavier, but should be cheaper to replace rings on.

I'm sure you'll be able to get a new spider, and then just need an XTR BB tool to swap over.

Cheers, Rich

Rich

Which spider is that? I've got the standard triple ring spider on mine.

Not sure the exact name, but it's a 4 arm and looks like a normal one apart from the fact that it doesn't take a ring on the outside of the outer tabs, if that makes sense. I popped in and got it direct from Matt - 1 advantage of being an ex-employee there 🙂

I'll take a pic tonight if I remember and post it up if that helps. Give Matt a ring, he's very helpful.

Cheers, Rich

Couple of quick snaps which I hope show the spider clearly

I had through that the outer ring was a standard 4-arm, but as it says duo it's perhaps something slightly different. This may be the thickness of the material where it bolts to the spider so you don't need to use funny chainring bolts, or it could be the positioning of the ramps and pins for shifting.

Either way it works nicely 🙂
