No biking experience but as general advice I'd stay away from Phuket, its a sh1t hole. There are so many nicer places to visit. Head where everyone else doesn't, well, at least away from the package holidays destinations. Should be some good riding in the mountains to the north.

bluddy hell, thats the first time ive EVER hear phuket described as a sh1thole!!

just been there over christmas and thought it was lovely!!

what i really wanted to know was is it worth having a geared mtb over there? or ss? or just a road bike? i saw a few airborne and specialized mtb's, but they were always on the road. its sposed to be quite mountainous, but would have a liked some advice from someone who knows the area well really :-/

Phuket is a beautiful place - but there are parts of it which are definitely a sh1thole! The main sex tourist place is a hell hole but literally one town on it transforms into a beautiful fishing village - wierd

well if you go, pie is the most amazing place, and would be really good mtbing there, although i didnt get a chance as i didnt have the money to rent the bikes from them.
Pie is about 3 1/2 hours north of chaing mai by bus (not sure about getting your bike there). Dont bother trying to ride further south though.....unless you want to ride your road bike, even then northern thailand would be amazing

There's some awesome riding around Chang Mai - drive up to the top of a mountain and descend for a couple of hours sort of deal 🙂 . Several companies out there who'll lend you kit, provide a guide etc. We paid about £25 for a day - got GT idrives, lift and guide, body armour etc. It was fantastic.

Judging by some of the driving we saw in Phuket I'd imagine it's lot safer riding off-road there than it is on-road....
