If it works, check the GPX files on it for the ride start points and guesstimate the home location

Good point Alasdair, I'll give it a try....

Mind, do I need specific garmin software or will I just be able to access it like an external memory stick?

yes, if switched off it can be read like a storage device

(my 800 can anyway)

Must remember to stick my name and number on mine!

As well as entering owner info on to the device I've added a text file to the storage, "OWNER_INFO.txt", containing my contact info.

On a garmin 800 you can edit the startup menu - mine now shows name and phone number when the unit is switched on
