Are there any reasonable backyard loops? Just moved up here and not had much joy. Any cheeky trails...I don't want to drive?

Yes loads, OS Explorer 182 is a good start, most are to the north, going south you run into the edges of London. Its possible to string together anything up to about 50km straight out of the door, I generally loop round St Albans one way or the other. Nothing very technical, Herts CC tend to "improve" those to death but most of it is nice and scenic. Nearest place to Shenley for a short reccy is the woods between N and S Mimms.
