I marshalled at the Hamsterley 121 last year - it was a cracking event from what I saw and from what the competitors said.
A few of us are hoping to have a go this year - it seems pretty laid back and appealing to more than just the fitness/race freaks.

Northern rock cyclone but you've missed that.
There are plenty within driving distance as you can do the borders or Lakes in a day which opens up lots of possibilities.
Selkirk marathon the weekend after next.
