They look pretty good weight / price
£400, 1486g and more importantly no weight limit like the proIII I've had my eye on for a long while (I'm 85kg in kit)
Anyone run a set? How are they through winter? Could they handle the occasional small rooty drop (no more than 2 foot)
Will be destined for the hardtail I *attempt* to race on
I have a pair of the SS 29er wheels.
Just got them.
Seem very light for the money.
Will be running tubeless when I get round to it.
I am 85 kg also and not going to hold back on em, they are 32 3 cross so would hope they would be Ok.
I had a pair 3 years ago,lasted one Scottish winter,sealing on them was gash.Bought pro11's...stll going
Hmmm - how easy was it to service / replace the bearings then?
I'm currently running proII's on 4.2s and the rear hub needed all the bearings replaced after a year, so was hoping the AC;s might be better
I've run a set since March this year. I'm no lightweight but they've been great and I've used them a lot as I've been switching them between bikes:

I'm not sure exactly what weight they are but they are certainly lots lighter than the Hope XC/X717's I was running before.
Yep thats the same set - quoted weight is 1486g at clees.
Do you remember where you got them from & the price you paid?
My proII's/4.2s are quoted at 1803g so a pretty substantial saving which should make a real difference on longer races
Are you using them tubeless?
I bought mine from www.eurobike.uk.com (they actually arrived the day after I ordered them) and I think they were £400.
Rutland cycles have them on their site for £399 at the moment.
had a pair for about 18 months, run them ghetto tubeless on cube ams, converted them to 15qr and now on s-works enduro sl (08) they run great. done marathons, afan, peaks coed-y etc; still run true.strong and light.go buy 'em.
The latest ones like mine are supposed to be tubeless (it says it in big enough letters on the side) but I've not tried it yet.
thanks for the info guys. shame I can't find anywhere doing a discount on them! Will have to save a little while longer
Oli - how did you convert them? I thought they were qr only?
ive got two pairs - had one for three years, one for a year.
totally trouble free and still running true. Best wheels I've got and can take some abuse.
I've got the mtb26's and love them, pretty light for a £400 set of wheels, graphics are a bit blingy though, especially the big 'valve' sticker in case you can't find the hole!!
Been using them for around 6months in Scotland no problem.
Ok then, so next really important question.
White or black rim?
For a black charge duster 🙂
Black
stans rim strips. bought the qr15 kit from just riding along.com.£16. ran tubeless with conti supersonics. made for a really light wheelset. now running with maxxis ardents 2.25 on my spesh enduro.hubs are really light. i would buy another set without hesitation.
black, the graphics on the white are gastly!!
I've been running a set of MTB26's on an Anthem for about 2 yrs - got them for a bargaintastic price when Merlin were doing a deal. I've done zero maintenance on them, riding a couple of times a week throughout the year (apart from this last winter when I had a new hardtail to play on). Still running true and there's no sign of play developing at all. And as a bonus the graphics are bit less bling then the new ones.
oh I just remembered, the skewers you get with em arent too good (so most people will tell you) and quite heavy.
I heard so much bad stuff about the skewers I just continued to use my X-LITE titanium ones.
Oh yeah - good point, skewers were complete gash.
Yep - I also chucked the skewers that came with mine and used Shimano ones instead.
How were they gash? Didn't tighten up / loosen off / flexy?
They seemed pretty light at 80g ish for the pair.
Didn't realise merlin sold them.
The skewers are definitely not 80g/pair, more like 80g each.
Ive not actually used them but Ive they have been known to lock up & become difficult to open/close.
I think thepurist has had a bad experience with them?^^
They have very small bearings, which don't last long under some people, good value though.
However... I'd be tempted to go with something like these personally.
Weights of skewers here: http://www.amclassic.com/en/products/components/quickrelease.php
but mine definitely arent that light, my XLITE titanium's are 79g/pair and I remember weighing (Yes sad i know) the AC ones when i got them and them being double the weight.
I can check again tonight if you want as i still have them.
Yep they started getting really difficult to close & open, even with lubeing of the cam they were still bad - the 'cup' bit was quite loose and it seemed it had to be positioned in exactly the right place for the cam to close properly. Not worth the effort in the end so swapped them for shimano which have been perfect.
Tune are the only lightweight skewers I'd touch, proper internal cam. All the others are just a bit scary!
Hmmm, currently using cheapy superstar qr's which way in around 90gs and have been perfect so far. May just keep them.
Njee - I like the weight / price of the fun works you linked, but it says a weight limit of 80-85kg which unless I'm going to ride naked I;m going to be right on the limit of!
Plus I'd like these wheels to be used for training rides as well as races which means I occasionally get carried away and do the occasional small drop/jump so wouldn't want to destroy them (hence why I'm shying away from the proIII)
Never heard of fun works either...
Didn't tighten up / loosen off / flexy?
The rear came loose a couple of times in use, causing the rear wheel to move under load and the tyre run against the chainstay. Replaced with Shimano's (which I use on all my other bikes) and no further issue.
Fun Works seems to be an Action Sports 'own brand' but Superstar sell the same hubs apparently.
Didn't notice the weight limit, wonder why that is, they're only ZTR Alpine rims! I certainly wouldn't expect those to be phased by the odd 'enthusiastic' moment!
Just did a bit of googling and indeed Neil from SS says it's the fun works hub is the same as the 'switch' hub that he sells.

Hmmmm. Given the quoted weights for the swich hubs I'm not sure it would build up into such a light wheelset it is the same as the fun works.
(f = 195g r = 399g)
I think it pays to steer clear of the AC skewers then!
I thought that yesterday when Neil posted on that BR thread!
Even so, I imagine they're just coming out of Taiwan somewhere! They look reasonably light. Their other wheels are good value too.
