Anyone got a lathe ...

[Closed] Anyone got a lathe (and willing to do me a favour)?

I need a small cylinder of aluminium (or brass/stainless/whatever) turning on a lathe - it's 15mm long and 10mm dia - like below. Has a groove around one end. A tapped hole is needed in one end, but it's an unusual thread so I can do that if necessary. A 4 or 5mm hole would suffice. I can provide the original.

Anyone know anyone who might be able to help out?

Cheers!

Nowhere near Essex I'm afraid, but would happily pay postage and for materials & time etc.

Cheers,

Whilst this threads here, would anyone be able to reduce the length of some 15mm fork addapters for me? There wasnt a kut available for my wheels, so bought the closest i could find and They need about 2.5mm taking off the end of each side.

In berkshire, happy to pay in hobnobs/beer/jaffa cakes/money.

I'm not a tool maker and I am certainly not able to get hold of a lathe (if you had have asked at easter id be more able to help), but that drawing you have posted isn't it going to be pretty tough to get the thread down an 8mm blind hole? the tap will bottom out before you get a decent cut through the depth, or atleast with the taps ive been able to use.

As above. You won't be able to tap much of that hole. You can get a bit further by grinding the base of the tap off, but it's hard work to cut the thread then as you loose the gradual cut.
It will be much easier to manufacture if the tap drill hole extends further into the item.

Nipping down to the shed to see what metal i've got, if there's anything suitable then i'll have a pop. No suitable tap but a pilot shouldn't be a problem. Will keep you posted.

Awesome, thanks Coatesy.

Yes, that hole can go right through the part if that would help. The 8mm bit is the 'useful' length, but I hadn't thought about the actual process of tapping when I drew it.

Cheers,

(slightly annoying smart arse mode on)
The drawing is over dimensioned. You can either have the individual length, 1.0, 9.0 etc, or the overall, the 17.0, but not both. (or 3 individual and the overall.)
You could, according to the tolerances, have a part with dimensions 1.1, 9.1 etc, which is bigger than 17.1.

Wish I could help, lathe still on the wish list when I have a few spare £'s.

If coatesy has no luck, I can have a go in few days after working 12hr shifts 🙁

I should have a few old taps that size, (35 years in engineering helps)and if I do, I can cut one down gradually to get a thread down to the bottom of that short hole 😉

the drilled hole will have a 118 degree angle on the bottom of it. unless you do it with a slot drill.

First attempt from an offcut completed, off to make a proper one now i've just found a decent piece of material, and learnt not to back myself into a corner when machining 😳

Why does the hole need to be blind? Is there any reason it couldn't simply break out the other end?

No reason other than aesthetics. If it's much easier to go all the way through, that'd be fine.

Job done, pilot hole at 5mm, left blind as if you tap through into the waisted section, it's going to be fairly thin at that point, and possibly liable to breakage. E-mail me your adress and i'll lob it in the post for you, doubt if they'll declare it dangerous, so should be with you in a couple of days.

Good work on the drawing. And awesome work coatsey on knocking it up. You didn't get a pic did you. Love this stuff. Proper Metal work like this makes me a little excited.

I'll go check

[edit]

Yup, thanks, I'll I'll go get some accurate measurments tomorow and post them off.

Does anyone have a drawing showing the offset from the dropout to the face of the 6-bolt disk mount for a 15mm axle? I know how much to take off in total, but not how much to proportion it between the two sides.

TINAS, can you take the measurements from the original adaptor?
