*Why does every scrote ride a (no doubt stolen) Specialized Rockhopper

I resemble that remark! Paid for mine fair & square too.

Even though I'm a "big lad" on some routes through the Lutonia area I have been on the lookout for sticky-fingered funkwits.

I don't ride my 'mountain' bike around Liverpool, firstly as there's absolutely nowhere decent to ride it and secondly, whilst I am no wimp, it's just I couldn't be arsed with the looking over my shoulder and any possible criminal proceedings should the worst happen.

Better just to avoid any possible situation to begin with.

Never even thought about it TBH. Think I only saw about 6 people on tonights ride, and 2 of them had guns, they just gave us a cheery Hello!

Guess things are different in the West Wilts 'bronx'.

Can't say I've worried about it but the thought of "what if" has crossed my mind once or twice.

Mrs Carlos has voiced her concerns in the past over me meeting men I've only met on the internet in carparks early in the morning though 😉

30 burglaries in 3 mile radius of my house! Seems a lot.

"30 burglaries in 3 mile radius of my house! Seems a lot."

Probably just the work of one scrote and his wily apprentice. The Police usually have a good didea who the local burglars are, just a question of getting enough evidence left at the scene to convict. Crime rates usually drop when they are banged up and then spike on their release.Recidivism much more commonplace than reform unfortunately.

It just strikes me that theives are actually pretty clever at spotted good new opportunities for easy gains.. remember when memory in PCs was "worth more then its weight in gold".. there was a spate of house / office burglaries where pc memory was taken.

In the last five years there has been a large expansion of MTB riding, especially now more than ever more and more expensive bikes are being ridden around... if I was so inclined (and about 2'6" taller) it seams like easy pickings.
What other £1.5 to £6k item do people carry around with them ? Next most expensive object is Cash, or a watch...

Managed to escape an attempted bike-jacking on the north edinburgh cycle path with bike intact - group of lids jumped out at me below Crewe toll and knocked me off my bike. Fell on me arse, got up and it was sort of a Mexican stand-off - they threatened to stab me so I re-mounted and did one, leathering 32:16 whilst some rat-creature legged after me raining blows on me back.

The outer loop line in Liverpool, which is the trans-Pennine route, is almost comically set up for a mugging. Dark, disused railway cutting with no exits in Norris Green? Lovely. Never had a problem through it though, the scallies you pass look pre-occupied with weightier matters.

Heard of a few cases of it London (so on roads not trails) where the first thing the victims have known about it was the brick coming through their front wheel... apparently several bricks are thrown at once to try to ensure one makes good contact 🙁

My son had his Kink BMX stolen three weeks ago from our village. One of the boys was known to my son's friend (who'd grown a bit over the years I guess), so we provided the name to the police with statements. One of the accused party then provided a statement to the same effect.

Said boy was in court charged this week... I await the conviction before seeking redress.

If you see a nice Kink Whip signed by Matt Priest, my son would like it back 🙁

Rounded a corner late one night in the heart of the Gorbals and ran into 3 unlikely looking junkies.Somehow i managed to turn the bike at right angle and nip off,but i got the distinct feeling my bike could have been destined to pay for their drugs....

Some big kids tried to "skate board jack" me and my brother in the mid 70's. My brother hit one of them with his skate board (truck first) and we legged it.

All very exciting really and a bit scary as I was only 6 or 7, brother about 10 or 11.

Not been a victim but have heard a few stories about it happening at my local spot (lordswood). I ride there most evenings so get to see the scrotes on stolen motorbikes regularly (especially as I come in via the greenway from baker's drove)

So far, in 10yrs of riding solo there, I've always been left alone. I think a combination of staring straight at them, riding as quick as I can and saying 'alright mate' in my best chav accent has worked...

I do not ride my full suspension there any more due to the stories I've heard, plus even on the hardtail I am paranoid of people following me back so always take a weird route through streets/alleys to make sure no-one can follow.

Thinking about it, the scrotes are generally near the estate up to the middle crossroads in LW, (South/west) - so if you avoid that area you are unlikely to come across them.

Edit - bar mounted tazer sounds awesome!

I live in a pretty safe area but there are groups of pikies that set up on some local bridleways - one lot had about 50 caravans and trucks and stuff, it took a while to cycle past them and the thought has crossed my mind. Being glared at for having the temerity to cycle past and being attacked by their dogs doesn't help.

Oh dear oh dear. Another Sun/Daily Mail reader believing the hype.
A big group of travellers set up where I ride with my dog. Some kids, whose parents have obviously instilled the same prejudices as you have came running up "Don't go in there! The gypsies will get you!". Don't be stupid says I. Ride through the area, their dogs are all tied up, bark a bit, but don't go near mine. There are a few blokes sitting round, I give em a nod "Alright", they smile and nod back "Alright". Pretty bloody scary I tell ya. NOT!

Somebody tried to have my bike off me once. Because I was going up hill I jumped off grabbed the saddle and the bars and swung the bike at them. Nothing like a chainring to the head to make them think twice about nicking bikes. Although these days the scrotes are more likely to have knives or worse.

True story. Local caravan folk attempted to nick a generator and copper cabling from my works new building a couple of weeks ago. They couldn't lift it themselves so they tied a horse to it, not just any horse, a shetland pony. The CCTV of them geeing this poor little begger is hilarious. Security chased them off, leaving it still tied to the generator.

Next day a lad came round "s'cuse me mister can I have my horse back...."

I have no proof but 4 lads broke in to our work bike sheds last week. I wouldn't be surprised if they were from the caravan site too.

It's only a matter of time till I get a bike stolen. Thats why I insure with M&S!

I walked out of my house to see two guys hanging out in the shadows under some trees where a bike path cuts through a park. Thought: "they look a bit dodgy"

Sure enough 10 seconds later one of them steps out in front of a cyclist and tries to push him over. Guy kind of get off his bike, assailant 1 tries to punch him in the face, but only connects with his helmet. Assailant 2 rushes over, I see red, rush over and send pull the two assailants of, they run away and I walk round the block with the guy whose bike they tried to nick. Not sure who was more shaken up... I spent the next two days with more testosterone pumping round my body than I'd ever experienced before...

Not big, not clever, but it would probably happen again.

I don't worry for myself particularly. In fact, it had never crossed my mind till I read this thread.

Do worry about the kids though.

A friend of mine had a Titus (my old one actually) stolen from under him in Lordswood.

I've never had any problems, and I think that's reasonably lucky considering I lived in central Bristol for a year and regularly rode on the Bristol-Bath path late at night, never saw a soul!

(Mr MC posting)

Rode around the edge of sefton park, liverpool on the way home from a ride with a buddy as a student in the early 90's. Two scallies jumped out of a bush and gripped up my mate (I was a few feet ahead) and pulled a FA great screwdriver on him and demanded his bike. He was the quietest, meekest guy youv ever met. His reflex action was to punch the scally full in the face, so hard it knocked him off his feet. They were more stunned than we were. At this point as we were on the edge of a road I had stopped traffic on the way back to my mate to get witnesses/reinforcements, and the scallies legged it.

The postscript to this was that I rode with a couple of locals (one of whom lived in toxteth, rode a tricked out RTS, drove a BMW, owned a pit bull, and had a reinforced steel front door. No idea what he did for a living *ahem* but he was a nice bloke). I mentioned it to this guy he said oh yeah, they told me about it as they were going to try sell me your bike (GT Avalanche, the scallies thought it was a Zaskar)...

Got chased a few times at the top end of Smithdown road cycling into Uni.

Not a slight on liverpool I'm sure this happens in any town with areas of poverty mixing with affluent students.

The thought did cross my mind before I bought an expensive bike so I asked my mate who's been a copper for 10+ years (newcastle area). He'd never heard of it happening but did advise me not to go riding through dodgy areas.
My bikes are insured through my halifax home insurance and apparently are covered for this sort of thing happening. They dont expect you to put yourself at risk to protect your belongings according to the customer service rep I spoke to.

I have had one incident whilst passing 3 yoofs, one of which was on a £50 asda special. I heard him say to his mates "look at that bike" at which point he started to ride next to me.
"nice bike mate what is it a P1"
"nah its a stumpjumper"
"do you want to swap"
"not really but thanks anyway"
"go on I'll swap yer"
At this point I quickly rode off with him shouting ****ing w*nker at me.

interested to hear peoples views on how safe the bristol/bath cycle track is these days

i have been riding it for years and only had bother once from a group of chavs who liked the look of my bike.

One sat on a bench about 200m in front of his mates - he then just shouted when he seen my bike - two of his mates jumped out from a bush further up and tried to hit me off by launching bricks at me. As soon as i heard that shout i was flat out - luckily they only hit the bike and not me.

These days there seem to be alot more people riding at rush hour which makes it feel alot safer.

However i can see how you could get in trouble riding it late evening with no one around other than ASBO's

the council have stuck CCTV along bandit land now (easton - whitehall) but that was only after it got really bad a couple of years ago with the baseball bat crew and that nutter that went on a stabbing spree.

its a sorry state of affairs if you ask me.

it was even proposed at one point to number all the lamp posts - so should you get your head kicked in and they leave you with your phone 😕 you could ring the police and say where you where i.e lamppost number xxx

bit late by then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had this happen to me whilst cycle-touring a few years back.

To cut the story short. Two guys in a car threatened to slit my throat if I didn't give them my bike and all my stuff. I refused and rode off, thank god they didn't come after me. Was quite freaked out.

Another lad had the same thing happen to him about a week later, he wasn't so lucky and got in a fistfight, breaking bones and put an end to his round the world cycle-tour.

Was on the Kazakh-uzbek border, so not the safest of places by a longshot.

You have to be careful with your reaction to criminal scrotes. A mate nearly had his motor bike stolen from a garage while he was paying for petrol but the punk couldn't start it [XR600]. He flew after the kid gave him a mild slap or two but then his mates turned up with baseball bats and a stolen car to rescue him. When the police turned up they told my mate it was just as well they had got away or they might have arrested him as he was witnessed cuffing the lowlife!

Just because we are prejudiced against gypsied doesnt mean it isnt true and justified.

Everyone has stories of 'travellers' either a) robbing them or b) virtuously not robbing them - but I have never heard anyone tell a story of the gypsy who does great work for charity and did someone a right favour.

How many 'Travellers' do you know have job, run a legit honest busniess and pay their way/pay their taxes?

Next you will be telling me that we are all middle england snobs when it comes to our view of drug dealers.

In about 10 years of using the Bristol-Bath path (sometimes on a daily basis) I've had two occasions where a kid half my size (always egged on by a couple of non-participating mates) has decided to have a go at relieving me of my bike. I can't really call them attempted muggings as they really were a bit too pathetic. In both cases there were plenty of people around and on one occasion a fellow cyclist helped me to chase them off. Unpleasant but certainly not enough to put me off using it.

Overall I'd say it is a relatively safe place to cycle, just due to the volume of people using it. If someone did try and rob you, there's a large number of potential witnesses or interveners, and at least you're not going to get mown down by some idiot in a white van.

Happened to a mate of mine around a year ago in Morden. He was riding down the road one evening when a group of yoofs came out of a side road and clocked him one around the head with a car jack. Seven stitches and a stolen Klein.
I used to race motorcross and it was quite common to find transit vans tailing you on the way home to check where you lived. You got used to looking in your rear mirror for the last few miles to check. Still have that mentality now with the MTB on the back of the car - always keep a watch out for the last few miles.

I will never ride the Bristol-Bath track.

So many bloody accidents from idiots pulling out on their bikes or walkers crashing into you from not looking.

Never had anyone try mug me there (gorilla on the bike)

Give me the trails any day 🙂
