Hi,

As the title says, curious if there are any other manufacturers who offer the likes of stems and seatposts in Scandium alloy? I've got a Scandium frame, and being the sad person that I am I'd like as much of the rest of the bike in Scandium as well.

Cheers

So it all fails together?

My mates scandium kona frame failed on its first ride....folded up like tin foil riding over roots.

My mrs road bikes seat tube sheared from the top tube - propper easton scandium tube set it were.

It's what, 1% scandium? Not something I'd get hung up on!

Agreed njee, it's all just aluminium alloy. Scandium has a cool name that can be used in marketing guff. Just another alloy though, no difference.

@trail_rat: That sucks, I'd reckon that's more to do with mistakes in the frame designs than anything to do with Scandium alloying.

@njee and hmanchester: Actually, Scandium is a very potent aluminium grain refiner, meaning that it increases the strength of the alloy to a large extent. In fact: "Scandium provides the highest increment of strengthening per atomic percent of any alloying element when added to aluminum" Thus when used in an already strong alloy such as 7075, you end up with a very sturdy material. And no, none of this, including the quote, was taken from the KCNC website or anywhere else which sells or markets Scandium.

Also, I doubt bicycle components contain anything like ~1% Scandium, as it goes for ~£180 a gram. Fortunately, something more like 0.1% still does the trick 😉

"Simply adding Scandium to existing alloys is an expensive marketing ploy."

Hell of a selective quote there!!

Scandium is usually added to improve weld performance.
