Myself and my son (and the wife..chuckle) sat down for a bit to catch up on the Rampage last night... dull dull dull...

It's all become about surviving to get to the bottom, with one or two tricks thrown in.

I'm not saying it's easy -it looks terrifying... but as a spectator spectacle, it's become dull.

A few years ago it was more like slopestyle, but on a big hill.. tricking off everything, wooden kickers etc.
I know it's more natural now, but it's lost it 'pzazz'....

I like DH racing, so it's not just about the tricks.
I like slopestyle, so it's not just about the sheer speed and big bikes...

Hmmm

I disagree.

The pace of it is slow, due to the judging and the camera angles but the action is top drawer.

Maybe you need a bigger tv ?

Now as a doctor I'd have expected you to be happy to see no serious injuries in the finals this year.

I wouldn't say I found it boring, but it did lack the drama provided by the enormous canyon gaps of previous years. I don't mind that though as I think it's made the competition closer.

While watching, I wondered if it felt a bit flat due to the main commentator not really being "on it". Cam Mccaul (?) was doing good colour commentary but the main guy didn't put much excitement into it.

I find slopestyle like BMX - it doesn't match what I do.
I like the natural aspects of Rampage. Not much of a fan of the big kickers, but like it when they use the natural landscape. I thought Semenuk got the mix perfect last year.

I guess YMdoesV

It helps to watch it live and watch all the runs rather than just the highlights. It gives a much better impression of how awesome some of the runs were

stopped watching a couple of years back
someone lifted the lid on the thoughts/financial pressures on many riders 🙁

It's quite formulaic.

North American man jumps off cliffs and hugs blonde wife at finish
North American man jumps off cliffs and hugs blonde wife and 2.5 children at finish
European/Kiwi/other man jumps off cliffs, throws in a double backflip and comes outside the top 10 #wasrobbed
North American man looks at flags, jumps off cliffs and hugs his blonde wife at finish
Etc.

All with shocking camerawork and cringe commentary.

I was quite up for watching it, but thought it ended up pretty dull. Some of my fave runs over the years have been by downhillers, but for various reasons they no longer attend. I'm also not a fan of the use of more sand bags than at the battle of the Somme. Needs to be more natural IMO.

The injury and initial lack of support of Paul Basagoitia didn't sit well with me either.

Yes, I find it really dull but didn't want to say.. 🙂

I mean, it shouldn't be dull. I'm sure if I was standing there I'd be utterly blown away but yeah, for some reason it's boring.

I watched a few runs, gave up, then watched the highlights only.

Love the WCDH though.

This is still one of my fave runs and not a backflip in sight:

+1

TBH it's a little like moto dirt jumping.

Camera pans round packed stadium before focusing on two large mounds of earth in middle.

Man does huge jump.

Next man does huge jump.

Last man does huge jump. Celebrates huge jump. Fireworks, medals, busty blonde white women and stirring national anthems.

The riders are utterly awesome. The level of skill is mind-blowing. However, for me, the format is dull.

I wouldn't say it's dull, I find the actual riding spectacular and quite fancy going to watch live. But it is a bit drawn out and the commentary isn't to my taste. I stuck it on the TV then got told off after about half an hour because I wasn't actually watching

I watched some but I don't think it's well suited to live viewing. 30 seconds of action followed by 5 minutes of zzzz.

Plus some of the camera angles were awful. Commentators raving about stuff you can't see because the camera was positioned on the opposite slope of a hill for some bizarre reason.

And yet some people can sit and watch a bunch of people pedalling their bikes along a road... for hours! or even days! THAT is boring!

I like Rampage. It all happens pretty quick. I get a full impression of how bloody difficult it is to do what they do and that's what entertains me.
My son watched it on his phone and only lasted 30 mins, pretty sure it's better on a big telly.

That said 4X is the most entertaining bike racing and they don't show that no more.

Just gotta say - it's not slopestyle. It's freeride. It's really not about the best tricks. Remind yourself of the judging criteria (I had to after protesting that McGazza was robbed).

The camerawork was worse this year, wasn't it?

The camerwork doesn't help convey what they're doing nowadays. Cam Zink's final run was pretty much down a cliff into a compression, over a canyon gap landing smoothly onto a manual and that was just the top part of his run!

Agree with what someone else said on another rampage thread that the best footage of what the riders were doing was from instagram from flok up on the side of the mountain

Maybe it all is too fast for TV... I mean, still shots from it have far more wow-factor I think.

In case you were wondering 🙂

Started to watch it last night, lasted about 30mins it just seem to have the excitement that the previous couple of years had. As above the camera work was dire especially when you couldn't see some of the landings. All the hugging kids and wifes...just dull.

Agree with the above, the camerawork is absolutely awful. It mostly doesn't convey the steepness and difficulty of what they are actually riding.

The commentary is also mindblowingly bad. I mean, how much do they really have to dumb everything down - are the American viewers really that thick and humourless? Imagine how much better it would be if Claudio and Rob were doing it.

All the blonde wives with nice teeth are funny though. Whoever said stereotyping was wrong?

Not sure why, I always like watching the manuals the best!

I have to say I thought the scoring was super unfair for that Bizet was it?

That Gee run is what killed it for me, watching someone ride a line so ridiculous so smooth and fast is miles more entertaining than someone pulling the first ever whatever off a big ol’ ramp

Some of the drone pilots may have just bought their first drone off argos last week.

Would’ve been good with Warner commentating!

( And maybe Claudio can jump the canyon for course preview one year )

What happened to the commentator who used to say "shut the front door" every four and a half breaths?

Got bored just watching bits of it. Gone down hill since they moved location. Didn't think the winning run was that great either.

I appreciate the skill of the riders but find it a bit samey after a while + I'm not keen on competitions decided by judges opinions.

That was my thoughts on some of it, they should have nailed it by run 2 and have known where to put the damm things in the sky.

As a format it's always going to be drawn out, the explainers earlier on the scoring format helped but something along the lines of this run could be worth x points if he pulls it all off would put some of the decision into perspective.

I watched the replay and skipped a lot of the talking in between.

What does seem to have been missing is the WTF moments

These ones got shared around way more than anything from the last few years, maybe it needs that built feature in there still.

Saying all that come october next year, I'll be watching

I watched it for a few years, a few years ago.
But since, nah. In the main it’s becuse the best riders who do the best rides just don’t win. It’s like the result is pre planned so the advertisers can feel vindicated for spending $$$$’s in promotional gunk splattered all over the screen, and the riders are the third consideration after the disjointed camera work.

But bloody hell, you’ve got to appreciate just the sheer skills of all the riders who take part.. and those that maybe not quite up to thier own game who don’t make it through the qualifiers.. you’ve got to have a bit in your brain that niggles when you even get to the top of the start line ridge.. and the back of your legs turn to jelly.

As for the recent events I’ve just not bothered, but it’s been said up there.. the American with the Blond wife/girlfriend, who is wearing a sponsored tight t-shirt and squeals a lot, yet the run just avoids all whoops and kickbacks wins.

There have only been 3 American winners...last was Strait in 2013, mostly Canadians on top, Bizet, McGarry & Lacondeguy were all up there more.

Have liked the last couple of years with things feeling slightly more 'natural'.

The scoring is, and always has been, all over the place so I watch it for the riding and the spectacle rather than the result.

Last run that really blew me away was Lacondeguy's win a couple of years ago, but Zink's second run this year's was close until his little balls up near the bottom.
