Coming down one of our local favourite runs the other week.
Mate is a bit behind, so we waiting at bottom for him.
He arrived in a cloud and stench of burning brakes.
Bit of BS for a minute or 2 then we set off again.
Well, he did not.....rear brake had jammed on.
Overheating caused pistons to expand and be unable to retract?
Luckily Giant MPH brakes, so could wind them out when a bit cooler.
Giant MPH are the old type 'closed' system brakes. As the fluid heats up, it expands and has nowhere to go except push on the pistons.
Newer 'open' designs do not do this, as the fluid goes back to the reservoir instead
๐
yep, used to happen on my hope c2s.
Always fun when you wind the (closed system) brakes out when hot and then forget to wind them back in after they've cooled and you start a killer descent ๐
same here: welcome to the 90's Benz ๐
bleed em often. thats the way with closed brakes.
Giant MPH = sheeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiitttttteeeeee.
Yep did that to my old mph's several times.
glad to see the back of them, for sure
Sounds like they need bleeding tbh!
upgrading........
Bleeding? Being close you should get away without bleeding untill you eventualy blow the seals out the callipers.
I thought DOT fluid's performance degraded over time anyway?
90's - nah, I'm much more up to date than that....HFX-9's on one of my bikes....
The MPH's are a revelation in comparison to his previous mal-adjusted v's with no braking material left. They have actually worked ok following change of pad and bigger rotors.
Anyways, avoids wasting good p*ss!
better than my mates 6mths old,UK made brakes, fitted to a UK brand bike, which melted the seals on a long descent and deposited him on the ground removing large amounts of skin from arms and legs ๐ฅ
My Hope M4 overheat but I am heavy on the brakes and I am a bit heavier than your average rider , but the descents are quite long and fast , I even had a brand of a M4 rotor on my wrist for a few weeks when i went to pull a twig out of my rear wheel and touched the rotor while doing so.
