Any general info/opinions on this destination for a short break (not biking)? Stuff to do and see? Plus, anyone know about everyday costs there, for a beer, snack, meal out etc? Just been to Budapest and enjoyed it - now looking for somewhere similar but different, if you know what I mean. Ta.
Ive been a number of time on recent trips to Slovenia in past few years. Its a lovely city, quite small but really nice just to wonder around the old streets. The main square around the bridges when the sun is out is quite impressive. Views from the castle in the centre show the green hills that surround the city. Pretty much everyone speaks English as well.
Costs are higher now they are in the euro, but still cheaper than here. A beer is around 2 - 2.5 euros depending where you drink. Only downside is limited direct flights from the UK. Definitely worth a visit, in fact if you are making the effort to go there the public transport is very good and cheap, and its only a few hours to the Julian Alps in the west of the country.
I live in Ljubljana. Would agree with Boz. Good day trip to see Postojna or Skocjan Caves. You can get to the seaside in an hour. Plenty of mountains around 2000m. Great place to visit.
Nope...but I've been to Lake Bled and it's beautiful.
Thanks for these. Lake Bled looks mint - just googled it. Couple more quick questions - is the climate good June-Sept and is Slovenia rammed with tourists in July and August. Lastly, is Ljubljana relatively free of the UK stag parties that are descending on places like Prague? Thanks again.
Been to Slovenia 3 times and will be going again sometime ๐
The caves are definately worth a visit but it is a bit of a rush through if it is busy, get there early.
A trip to Lake Bohinj would be good. You can get a boat trip, walk around the lake, hire bikes, kyaks or white water raft and tandem parajump ๐
I was a bit underwhelmed by Bled. Having passed through on 3 occasions we had a day trip last time we were there. the lake and surrounding area is nice but the rest is very touristy compared to Bohinj and Bovec where we have stayed(6 weeks in total)
Never been disappointed with food, drink, service or accom anywhere we have gone.
As for being busy, doubt you will meet many UK residents(maybe in Lub). Loads of Germans, Italians, Swiss but the areas where we have stayed do not appear to be on the UK radar so far ime.
Yes, the climate is good. Should be 30-odd days at or above 30 deg C over the summer. Tourists, yes, there are a lot. In Ljubljana these are Italian daytrippers, as well as your usual mix of Euros/Ozzies/Kiwis/etc. The number of Brits is limited by there being one 150-seater plane a day from Stanstead. Don't think I have ever seen a stag do, although you can probably find one if you search hard enough.
I did some work there a few years ago. Lovely city. Did some walking in the mountains - beautiful.
anlegov ... one 150-seater plane a day from Stanstead
We fly from Manchester
