We're off to visit the out-laws next week in deepest Suffolk - Beccles to be precise. Anyone know if there are any decent trails in the area? I'll be heading to Thetford for a day, but wondering if there's anything local for a wee blast.
Tips welcomed!
There are a few of us with MTBs around here but I'd be lying if I said it was an MTB mecca. There are a few decent routes around Fritton woods and Dunwich forest but you really need some local knowledge to get a decent ride in.
However, there is some excellent riding just down the rode in Tunstall - I suggest you make yourself known here: http://forum.trogmtb.com/
My in-laws live in Halesworth and i normally try to get to Tunstall Forest which has a good loop that i seem to pick up bits of and are quite good with little jumps etc.
They have a website and are quite helpful on their forum, think they also do an evening ride once a week.
Enjoy the Adnams ๐
Oh yeah, thats the one in MrG's post, didn't see that ๐ณ
Hey Ho Greedy! Tunstall is a good spot if you meet with TROG on a Sunday morning but can be a bugger on your own without someone showing you around. We ride on a Thursday evening from lowestoft and do a route out to Fritton as mentioned and youre more than welcome to join us. Failing that i'm not at work atm so if you post up when youre here and can get to Lowestoft i'll show you the way myself.
Howdy Mark, how's things? I must get round to hooking up with you guys for a Thursday ride...
Bringing it back on topic, if you don't already know there's a race on at Thetford this Sunday so depending on when you're coming up you might want to avoid riding there that day. Depending on the weather there should either be plenty of handy tyre tracks to help you follow the trails or a an unrideable churned up mess - let's hope it's the former.
Oh, and apologies for the moronic misspelling in my first post. Rode/road, I obviously had bikes on the brain for some reason :p
It's gonna be a mud fest - i brought some new summer tyres for Sunday . On Thursdays we start about 8.30 - it makes it alot more fun riding Fritton in the dark.
Thanks all! I used to ride around Tunstall quite a lot when we lived in Ipswich - we left in 2005 just as noises were being made about doing some proper trailbuilding. Good to see it's actually happened. There were some excellent trails in there - some of which I only managed to find once and never again. I'll try to get down to have a wee look.
I'll probably ride Thetford during the week. What's Thetford like these days? Is the old black still intact? I seem to remember hearing of the local trail building volunteers coming up against some resistance from the FC...
Thetford .... I'd tend to avoid the Black Route, it is pants. The Red route is better. We (Timber) have been getting better results out of the FC recently and they paid for 2km of trail to be (professionally) laid recently. Together with the sections we have worked on (Tightrope and 39 Steps) the red is slowly becoming a reasonable trail to ride though still far from perfect.
Don't forget to ride the Brandon Country Park trails as they are a lot of fun. Unless you like being stung by neck high nettles I'd avoid Santon Downham if I were you.
Have a peep on our website www.timbermtb.org go to the forum and see if there are any rides being planned.
