I am going 11 speed on my Scalpel. It currently has full X0 groupset. Will put an AB direct mount chainring on and need shifter, mech and cassette. So I was going to go for X01 as the direct replacement, however, X1 is about £175 cheaper and only 75g lighter.
Am I missing something? Is there a reason to choose X01? I even prefer the look of X1.
Imo no reason to go to XO1 over X1, I can't tell the difference and have both.
Cassette isn't proper machined blingyness, it's a seperate sprocket affair.
There's probably not huge amounts of difference in the rest of it.
This is what I was thinking. Great!
In my head it feels like a down-grade! The front mech is so close to the rear wheel on the Scalpel, so it makes a lot of sense as it's otherwise an amazing bike, and the old kit will go on my fatty which is currently 1x9. The leftovers will be used to re-build an Orange P7 frame. Should keep me busy!

Still comes as one piece though, everything pinned together
Go 1x10 instead, save a load of money upfront and every time you maintain it 🙂
All works fine just a bit heavier in the cassete and cranks(and no carbon)
I have the carbon X0 cranks anyway, so a 50g difference on the cassette. 10 speed won't give me the range I want for my riding even with a range expander.
Expensive I know, but the bike is amazing, so I think it will be worth it - and should bring it down to 22.5lbor thereabouts!
Have you considered going the xtr route and making your own 1x11?
Correct me if I'm wrong but the cassette's are cheaper and fits on a normal freehub. For me I have personal preferences with Shimano mechs, shifters, alu cranks and non gxp bb's.

Doesn't have the range of sram tho, which is what the op wants. Could still use the mechs and shifters though
Got to be Sram at the moment for 1X11 unless you're super fit. 10X42 with 32 at front is surprisingly close to a tradish 3X9 setup in range. At least I hope so coz that's what my new bike is going to be...
Had loked at xtr, but I like sram shifters and have avid brakes and rs pushlok so the cockpit is nice and neat. Also, as stated, the range is bigger.
Don't forget the XTR shifter/mech, XTR chain, X1 cassette option... Chain wrap isn't ideal, but shifts every bit as well as XX1 (and is prettier IMHO).

Put a 30T on, or even just get new cranks that can take a 28T - obviously you lose out on the 10T.
mate managed to shear the 42T clean off his X01 cassette this weekend - reckon they could do with beefing it up a little!

Based on sample of 1?

Why would you change to an XTR chain out of interest? I stayed with XX1 chain when fitting XTR mech/shifter.
njee,
If starting from scratch, I'd be inclined to go with the Shimano chain- should be a little quieter and there's the fancy slick finish. I'm running the XX1 chain on my setup now but there is an XTR on its way- will let you know which winds up working better.

Do, would be interested to know.
x01 cassette here, brand new in march - I think im on my 5th chain now, 2 new chainrings and 2500 miles with around 400,000 feet of climbing
not bad going at all, I don't use the 42cog very often, and the rest of the cassette still works/shifts like new
the 42cog is starting to slip ever so slight on short sharp climbs (used it on tired legs at the weekend), but it will sit in 42cog on long drawn out road climbs if needed with no skippage at all
all the rest of the cogs have no skipping at all, and in fact shift now as good as they did new
a major fact as njee and a few others have noticed, its very sensitive to cable setup, get this wrong and it will indeed feel like your cassette is buggered, but a quick change of cable (probably once every 3 months ive found and has a mate) this gets it back working great again, also my lbs dismantled my x01 rear mech and greased/cleaned the pivots and that made a big difference too
so all in ive never had this much wear out of a cassette, this is all peak district mileage/climb with wales etc thrown in too
That's good info OW. Congrats on your mileage too!
no worries alex, forgot to add, make sure you change your chain at .50 ish, the chains now you can get are 23 quid sram x1 and are slightly heavier than xx1 but just as strong etc
ive been changing my chain at .50 ish there or there abouts, I think this is the key to the wear
I think this time ill probs run it into the ground though now with it having slight slippage in 42t, although it was only one ride and the cassette/chain was filthy/wet and snowy etc so could just be down to no lube on...I just want to see it through the worst of winter now, then ill buy new again in march again, and hopefully get another year out of another new one
