aren't the bearign shells thicker on mtb ones - the axle won't go far enough into the NDS crank arm?

it's the sleeve between the bearings which I believe is longer, also the thread on the cups are slightly deeper, but that isn't a problem

The question should be, is the shoulder at the top of the threads the same distance from the outside of the bearing tophat? If not, can it be adjusted with 2.5mm spacers?

I don't see any harm in leaving the tube out of the middle.

Use the plastic sleeve from your old road BB. The cups are like 1mm bigger but still works

or use the old tube out of the old bbkt, its only plastic, but does help keep water out - beaten to it

iirc the bearing cups are different thickness, but I have used road BBs on MTB cranks and not died.

Road BB cups are actually wider than MTB cups(1.5mm each if I remember correctly), so can be used if you're willing to fiddle a bit.
