So I have decided to abandon 1*11 as I found it too restrictive and go 2*11 I already have an XTdi2 rear mech and shifter and thought to save buying a front mech shifter I’d try to control both mechs with one shifter. So does anyone have any real world experience of using this set up for mtbing?

Yes. It works very well. Just like a 14 speed cassette.
shifts well under load so just click away.

Synchro is so good that I don’t see any reason for them to offer a front shifter.
