As per the above really - I run an FSA Pro crankset with a standard 42 tooth big ring and 170mm crank arms.
I fairly frequently run out of gears on the hills around here.
Just wondered if anyone runs bigger than 42 and what changes might be needed with front mech etc?
44t is a pretty common size too, you'll probably need to raise the mech a couple of mm, and re-index.
I use a road bike triple!
52.42.32 x 11.32
It makes some of the steeper climbs i do quite hard, but fine other than that.
I also use my mtb for chaingangs, hence the need for the 52x11
Only issue i had, was that i just used the same BB and the inner ring carved a small groove out off the chain stay.
When using the 44x11 on changangs, i would be at my max around 34mph, are you maybe just needing to practise spinning more?
You run out of gears on a MTB offroad?

...No. Perfectly fine for the off road bits, which is 90% of my ride. Just the last 2-3 mile kamikaze down hill tarmac race back home with the boys. Legs whizzing round at 41mph!!!!

What are 'the boys' using? Use that.
Going to have a look around at 44s. Thanks
There are offroad descents down the Malverns too, just so you know! ๐
Anyway, for descending an MTB fast on road, eating more pies, developing a good aero tuck, and fitting fast rolling tyres will make way more difference than adding 2 more teeth to the chainring ever could... I clocked 52mph on road on an MTB some years back, I'd stopped pedalling a long while before I reached this speed!
