any diy suggestions on what is really a very simple object?

Inner tube and cable ties. Works fine with a little thought

Yup
I cut the innertube into a sort of H shape with the horizontal bar being about 5 inches thick - a small hole in the the tails where they join the centre bar, wrap the tails around the fork bridge and the crown, cable tie on.
Very simple to do. Simpler than the description

Cut-up an old BBS overboot, about 4"x6", cut holes in each corner, fitted with zip ties, works a treat.
