Hi All,

So my stolen Voodoo Djab has shown up- bought in Manchester Cash Generators for a song by a punter yesterday . He smelt a rat pretty quickly and got in touch with me via my Stolen Bikes ad He has sent me pictures/frame number to confirm it is the same bike.

He has called Cash Generators who say they bought it in good faith, and the best they can do is give him his money back and put it on sale again.. I would take it up with them, but unfortunately I am in Devon. Crime was reported at the time, I have a crime number etc, but it is taking forever to get through to the police on the 101 number... I want to do this by the book and make sure the punter is looked after for his honesty, but time is limited.

I wondered if there might be any Manchester Police using the forum who might be able to help me short circuit the call queues?

I don't see how they could put it up for sale again if they give a buyer his money back on the basis it is stolen property?

A shop can't sell known stolen goods. Just give them a call to remind them of this and then arrange pick up after the police have had time to do their thing?

I would return it and let them put up for sale the item they know is stolen and then get them prosecuted

I also thought they required photo ID for sales so the best they can do is say who sold it and give the address they gave

Best of luck but that is little more than fencing if they try to re sell goods they know are stolen

if they have said it in an e-mail then it may well be able to prove conspiracy to handle stolen goods

IANAL

Thanks all-

Sounds like calling the shop with all the evidence I have is a good starting point. Still not getting any response from the Police.

I would not call the shop they are clearly willing to both handle and then re sell goods they know are stolen

They are in breach of the law

Talk to the shop/ Don't talk to the shop.. good range of opinions there, good old STW..

Don't suppose there is anyone there who works for the police who might be able to proffer an opinion?

the shop handled your stolen bike and are still willing to re sell it rather than return it to you as thelaw says they must

You are free to talk to them if you wish but they are willing to break the law

I would just call 999 and moan that the other number does not work and ask for a number you can call

Contacting the shop is dependent on whether you are more concerned with getting your bike back or getting the shop prosecuted. Time is of the essence here. IMO, IANAL

Been in touch with the shop, they say that they won't sell it. Now need to talk to head office to get it in writing. May have to prove I an the rightful owner to them. Have had some advice from police, which is that it is better and quicker not to involve them if possible..

I'm conflicted on that. Initial reaction is that's piss poor, but then it's a stolen push bike, against dealing with an increased terrorism threat after what happened in London today. Hope you get sorted.

I interpreted that advice as relating to how quickly and less hassly he would get the bike back going direct to the shop (straight away) or through the police (forever and a day if it's kept as evidence while an enquiry and possibly prosecution takes place). But perhaps I'm seeing it through I-don't-want-it-to-just-be-the-police-being-crap eyes?

^Stolen push bikes are a much bigger "problem" then terrorism attacks imo.

So

Just to be clear. Police advice was given unofficially by a friend of a friend. I knew when no one attended the original break in that I was way down the list of priorities for Manchester Police, and to a degree I understand that. Yes, it's disheartening, but that's the reality of an underfunded force.

On the plus side, a copper who doesn't know me has just spent his Friday night giving me lots of good advice, and I find that heartening.

Looks like it's going to take a while to get sorted, and I'll probably end up driving up to Manchester at a time I need to be driving in the other direction, but hey ho...

Time for an update-

Bike finally back with me.

Police took a while to get going, but did exactly what I needed them to- called Cash Generators to arrange handover, and for buyer to get money back, then picked up the bike from the store so that I could pick it up from the station, which I did a week ago. Bike in pretty good nick (brake pads had mysteriously fallen out...) and ridable.

SO Manchester finest 1, thieving scroats 0

Happy Joe

am i missing something, isnt it 'thieving scrotes 1' too?

they sold the bike to the shop which you got back and buyer refunded, but they havent been arrested or even identified i assume? its of no concern to them what happens after theyve got their money, so arent they still laughing?

happy you got your bike back, good result 🙂
