Hi Chaps,

I'm going through a set of bushings a month on my Reign at the moment, and the Anthem is about the same too.

The lower eyelet on the shock body, which doesn't have any bushings, just spacers, does wear due it it mating against a aluminium bolt without the bushing - so my assumption is that the small amount of play in the shock body is a or the factor in the wear.

Does anyone else experience the same issues?

Cheers

Ricks

I have the same setup on a trance and haven't really noticed any play in 12 months. it does seem odd that there is no replaceable part

Ive seen a few reigns now, some thrashed, some good condition, and none of them have had a problem at this end of the shock. Strange.

Right we need to clear some things up first, as like a lot of people, I think you are using the wrong descriptions for parts ๐Ÿ™„

A bush in the 'hoola hoop' insert that press fits into the shock eyelet, all shocks have these or else the body of the shock would wear and you'd be having to buy new shock bodies every 6 months! The 'top hats' or shock pin that slides through the bush is a pivot pin that mounts the shock to the frame.

The top hat pivot pins are especially useless on the lower mounts and wear really quick. Best solution is to use HD stainless pins, they still wear, but you get 2 to 3 times more mileage out of them. You need to change the pin & bush at the same time, if you only do one then your problems will return V quickly.

No problems at this end with the Giant Anthem X 29er, just had to replace the bush at the top, which took under 5 mins.

Nope, I really have't got my terminology incorrect - even though the rolling eyes suggest I'm a numpty ๐Ÿ™„

Giant's don't have bushings on the shock body, they are mated directly to a pivot bolt, with spacers either side (not to be confused with the mounting hardwear (of which the reducers are a subset). No eyelet bushings to be found.

This is what I believe is the issue, and it is standard with Giant's - or at least post-2009, as my 2010 Reign, 2011 Anthem and 2009 Anthem had the same configuration.

It's the bushing on the top of the shock that wears, not the mounting hardwear.

To illustrate:

On mine the lower one doesn't use a bushing but instead uses a kind of thru-axle and a bearing either side. No play yet in a year and I don't see how it could wear TBH unless the bearings seized.

(09 Trance X frame)

100mphplus,
the bottom of the shock mounts direct to the pivot, there is no bearing or bushing or insert.
