My sister has asked me to find a bike for my brother in law. Will be his first mountain bike and, in all honesty, is unlikly to do much more than tow paths, green lanes and occasional woodland stuff.

A lad at work has just bought a voodoo wanga )i think) £350 from halfords and to be honest it looks spot on.
Get down Halfords and choose a Carrera in the colour he likes best...
They do the job well enough, if the bug bites he'll have a 5 in a couple of years, if not he's got a pretty respectable pub bike....
It's not worth the effort trying to the "perfect" bike sometimes...
