[Closed] Any balance bikes out there with brakes?

Hi there,

Daughter has a balance bike and is getting on really well with it. She is starting to go speeds that i think warrant having a brake as the old dragging the foot along the floor doesn't slow her down that much and is costing me a fortune in shoes! she is pretty small and only just three so not sure progressing onto a proper pedal bike will be for another year or so.

so - does anyone have a balance bike for their child which has a decent small brake on it and can recommend it?

Cheers

Dave

the isla bike dothan looks good. What would be perfect if the Kokua one did have a brake so you have a small elastomer and a brake - or am i asking too much…..

frog bike looks good as it has the limited steerer which i think is essential for them. bit heavier than the isla bike. maybe i could pimp it with some old cut down carbon bars…. 🙂

Note that all children's brakes are digital - on or off. No modulation and lots of skidding. Could be the riders I suppose.

So if they are going fast, expect them to lock up at high speed.

Rothan also has a steering limiter these days though ours didn't and it wasn't a problem.

Islabike Rothan, limited rotation steerer and rear V-brake. Just the job, my youngest got down some pretty steep stuff dragging that back brake.

You can buy a front brake for the Kokua Jumper. However I am an advocate of sturdy shoes instead of brakes for balance bikes.

My three year old has a vbrake on the front of his pedal bike and can modulate really well, down steeps and loose dirt.

I added a front hand brake to my kids Scott voltage walker. Tektro do kid sized levers and you can reduce the tension on the return spring on the caliper To help little hands.
If your current run bike has a little hole in the crown you may be able to add a brake.

+1 ridgeback scoot. Rear v brake is effective. MiniP has started doing big handbrake turn style skids with his. Funny once, but not when he is demanding a push every time he restarts.....

Rothans here.

I think it's the riders! Mine both started out with big skids every time, they learned quite fast to modulate. Unfortunately they also learned that they scare the bejeesus out of us better with skids 🙂

OP - if she's 3 and going that fast I'd be looking at a pedal bike. My eldest got a Cnoc 14 for his 3rd birthday, didn't really start riding it til he was about 3.5 but as it was around he sat on it etc and got used to it. Youngest, 3.5, just did his first solo 10 feet or so today on the Cnoc 14 (proud dad day!).

How about a massive rear disk?

I couldn't get one though as they have sold out.
