[Closed] Another what bike - winter commuter road bike - CX?

I know another what bike/ what CX bike thread, but I need to buy a new road winter bike, and handily can get one on the cycle to work scheme saving a few quid.

Only trouble is i have to use cycle solutions and the bike i was going to get, a cannondale CAADX 105 disc is now out of stock with them until April (yes everywhere else is showing stock in 1-2 weeks)

So this leaves me with what else to get....

Needs to have eyelets for full length mudguards and clearance for 28mm tyres, ideally disc brakes too.

Trouble is cycle solutions seem to have limited choice 🙁 I was after a pinnicle (but they don't stock them), then the cannondale but now thats out of stock

Do i go with the lower level cannondale CADDX Tiarga or something completely different, options are:

Giant TCX SLR 2
Felt F65X
Merida Cyclo cross 500
Raleigh CX Comp

I looked at the Gensis Equilibrium Disc 10, but it doesn't look as well spec'ed compaired to the others and is the most expensive but nearly £100 too, similar with the new specialized diverges

Any thoughts?

Do you actually want a CX bike, or a road bike with discs, decent clearance, and mounts for guards/racks?

"general purpose all-road bike" is kind of more, well, general purpose isn't it? chuck some panniers on, couple of water bottles - tour the highways & by-ways; nip down a forest / farm track when the notion takes you - perfect..

They don't do that bike yet

No, you're right i don't really want a CX bike (but most are tagged as that, but aren't full on race cx things), but they seem to be the ones with the bikes that "fitted the requirements" with the cannondale the geo wasn't too far off their road bikes so seemed a good basis, from what i remembered, might have been the same but i looked into it a month ago and made my mind up, now when i can actually order there is no stock :-(.

I would be happy with any that bike that fitted the requirements be it a cx bike, gravel road bike, road bike or whatever else stupid name they want to call it bike

If they can do Genesis the CDA 10 is bit cheaper than the croix de fer

Aluminium now being cheaper than steel.

What brands can the supplier get?

I have a Giant TCX SLR 2.. Very happy with the bike. Id recommend one, comfortable on longer rides and on road, handles good off road aswell.

I disagree about the genesis being a lower spec overall - just a shift in priorities.

Seems to me it has much better wheels and a steel frame; the trade-off being tiagra vs 105. Brakes match the best of the rest. Finishing kit is supposed to be pretty good on Genesises.

Comes down to whether you value a steel frame or not. FWIW, I do and would have an equilibrium if I could (I'm building a kaffenback ATM).

^^ I think genesis put more money into the frames sometimes than competition, often at their risk of getting slated for poor overall vfm.

Whyte are fantastic. Customer services is on the other end of the phone and really helpful.
I've had a Suffolk for 2 months now for commuting and it's awesome. I've now got mudguards and pannier rack on it and 28mm tyres. It's capable of 35's!!

For your money try the Sussex, same bike nearly. British and fab!!!

Can't see that on their website

Cannondale Synapse disc? Love mine

That looks interesting... is it able to take full mudguards, does it has bosses for them?

Looked at the Whyte range?

Not an option

not set on discs, but brakes would need clearance for 28mm conti 4 seasons, don't think my current 105's do

Quite a few, Giant, cannondale, Gensis, Spec, Felt, GT, Kona, Merdia, Raleigh, Scott are the main ones, so plenty of choice

I have a Giant TCX SLR 2.. Very happy with the bike. Id recommend one, comfortable on longer rides and on road, handles good off road aswell.

Thats good to know, have a nice Giant carbon mountain bike. What are the bosses like? and clearance?

[quote> http://www.cyclesolutions.co.uk/p73070/kona-esatto-disc-2015-road-bike how about this

Just out of the price range, allowed up to £1,100

I will have another look, guess the groupset grabs the headlines rather than the more hidden frame

True, and the groupset will wear out and be replaced with what i want later

Thanks all for your input so far

Cda 10

Link

There is also a 20 which is 1 x 10

And the Equilibrium 10 claims space for 28mm tyres and mud guards

I've just got myself a Genesis Equilibrium Disc, it's really bloody lovely. I can't stop staring at it! I got the frame only and put an old groupset on it with some new wheels and decided to try a dynamo hub/lights too. I just used Genesis finishing kit taken off another bike at the shop as the bars where pretty much the exact same shape as my other road bike, kit seems decent, but bars and stuff are a personal thing. First ride is tomorrow evening, if it rides half as well as it looks I'll be very happy!

I commute on my cx bike - a Ridley crossbow - and it's pretty good, but there are a few things I don't like about it. Flat bars with disk brakes would be far better, but less obviously - toe overlap. It wasn't too bad before, but fitting a set of full length guards has made it far worse. I've given up track standing at lights now, as I always do it with a foot leading, which invariably will catch on the mudguard.

Don't have this issue on my road bike, but it's too nice to commute on!.

Not sure how that helps the OP out, if he is having to buy on C2W.

Be brave and buy my genesis skyline singlespeed winter training bike / commuter

Guaranteed to make you need to buy larger trousers to accommodate bigger thighs after the first few weeks

If you want to stay strong over the dark months this is what you need

£250 including full guards and Blackburn rack. Ortlieb panniers to go with it for a few bob more

Gee76, perfect transaction through paypal, bought direct rather than fleabay, no issues. Its a 54cm, bought F+F, seatpost, seatclamp, two headsets and a spare rear hangar £ 320.00 delivered with £ 26 duty to pay when it arrived. Bought a 29er off them last year, done two seasons racing on it as its been faultless. www.flyxii.com

I would be looking at them, but the supplier, cyclesolutions, don't stock them unfortunately

Our company uses cyclesolutions and they tell us they can get any brand.

I had a CX bike for a bit this year, even with road-style geometry it was heavy (mechanical discs, basic wheels) and frustratingly slow.

I now have a winter road bike with permanently fitted SKS Chromoplastic guards and caliper brakes (but kool stop salmon pads).

Much prefer it, especially after getting a 29er HT which covers the light off-roading that the CX used to do.

Ta KKF, I'll look into it. There's so many to look at. I quite fancy a thru-axle version but they don't seem to do that on a roadie yet so cx might be the way to go.

Under Budget at £1000 so room for a few extra's or go for the Four at £1200. I tried one and realy liked it but got permission for a bigger budget.

I would have gone for that (or hopefully upgraded to the four as the colour is horrid) but not available through my scheme

To update, I have now chosen a bike. A Cannondale synapse 105 disc. Hopefully should be here in time for christmas. Just need to order some little bits to go with it now 🙂

Thanks to all your help here as usual.
