having bought the pink (size small) 5-spot frame that was advertised on here last week (Horst link jobby), I am now embarking on a fresh build project for the wife.
as with all good projects, the original projected costs have spiralled, not least because the frame was not as described in terms of condition (am a bit miffed about this, and despite emailing the seller, have had no response). the frame is now going off at the weekend to be stripped and repainted (powder coat) and a new set of zerks, decals and headtube badge have been ordered (the zerks were painted in as part of a piss-poor paint job).
i will post up pics as i go along, but the time being, this is the projected spec:-
- 2004 Turner 5-spot frame with RP23 Boostvalve shock and 5" (standard) plates - repainted white with black decals and black metal headtube badge.
- DT Swiss EXM130 130mm forks (QR) - the plan is to get the decals changed to black/grey/ apple green rather than black/grey/red
- Thomson 80mm 0-rise stem
- FSA carbon pro riser bars
- FSA carbon pro inline seatpost
- Selle Italia X1 custom ladies saddle (black and green)
- FSA Orbit MX headset - black
- Hope Pro 3 XC3 silly-light wheelset with 355 rims (with custom green decals) and 3-bolt rotors
- Superstar 9mm bolt through QR for the front - green (with Hope converter)
- Superstar 10mm bolt through QR for the rear - green (with Hope converter)
- Schwalbe Rocket Ron Evo front / Racing Ralph Evo rear
- Full 2013 SLX 2x10 groupset with clutch rear mech
- Brakes will probably be SLX, but undecided on that one
- SPD pedals
The build should be fairly light... the bare frame complete with shock weighs in at 2.2kg which is pretty good going and the fork is pretty light too (circa 1650g) along with the sub 1,500g wheels.
Quite looking forward to getting it underway.
Wish I was your wife 🙂
Are you sure about that frame weight!! <5lb for a full bouncer frame?
might be wrong, but i do remember thinking 'crikey, this weighs no more than many steel hardtails!'...
do remember that it is a very small frame size, so it's perhaps not really fair to compare it with other more normal sized offerings
i believe the 5-spots can be built down to the mid 20lbs category fairly easily, so that's where i am aiming!
I'm also surprised at that weight. The 5 Spot was never the lightest bike, although being a small will help. They're good solid bikes which last well - look forward to seeing the pictures and hope the wife enjoys it!
I too am the lucky owner of a 2003 Horst Link small Turner 5 Spot. She weighs in at just over 26lbs and is built up with XTR, carbon & Mavic Crossmax wheels. Originally she came with a Romic coil shock which has since been replaced with a Fox RP23 Boost and to begin with was a rich metalic red which I disliked from the very start and so was powder coated in gloss white with black decals before being built up. A stuning bike in every sense and is still my choice ride over other bikes I have which includes a bouncy high end carbon. I would be interested to know where you are sending the frame to be refurbished as I have been considering this for a while for my Turner and often thought if it is worth sending her back to the USA for a complete overhaul. A service that Turner used to offer on their website but I notice that this is not listed on their website at the moment.
I wish you luck with the build and eagerly awaite to see the pictures.
do you have any pics you could post up for some inspiration?
did you have the rear triangle painted too, or is this raw alloy?... did you do anything with the rockers? (which are anodised). i'm planning to paint both main triangle and the rear triangle (and then simply helitape the chainstay as i'm going to use a clutch mech which should minimise damage to the chainstay when in use)
i'm taking my frame to a place in southampton (can't remember the name offhand, although i posted it on a thread yesterday) who charge £30+VAT for bead-blasting, powder-coating and laquering (decals above or below lacquer) in any RAL colour. they will also add a sparkle finish FOC if you want.
my original plan was to stay bright pink, then i drifted over to lambo green (as i had a car in that colour a few years back), but i saw a couple of pics of white turners and the decision was made!
i have already ordered up the new headbadge (the bolt-in type) from crc and some new zerks and downtube transfers from silverfish.
right... the final spec (paint colour aside) is now sorted and reads as follows:-
- 2004 Turner 5-spot frame with RP23 Boostvalve shock and 5" (standard) plates - repainted ??????? with black decals and black metal headtube badge.
- DT Swiss EXM130 130mm forks (QR)
- Thomson 80mm 0-rise stem
- FSA carbon pro riser bars
- Uberbike skinny lock-on grips
- KS i7 remote dropper post (27.2mm)
- Fizik Arione Donna saddle - white/black
- FSA Orbit MX headset - black
- Hope Pro 3 XC3 silly-light wheelset with 355 rims
- Superstar 9mm bolt through QR for the front - black (with Hope converter)
- Superstar 10mm bolt through QR for the rear - black (with Hope converter)
- Schwalbe Rocket Ron Evo front / Racing Ralph Evo rear
- Full 2013 SLX 2x10 groupset with XT clutch rear mech and 38/24 chainrings & 11-36 cassette
- Formula RX disc brakes
- Hope 3-bolt 185mm front rotor (although I have a 160mm rotor too) and 160mm rear rotor
- SPD trail pedals
in terms of colour... at the moment, the current plan is to go for pink (with or without sparkle... i'm thinking without).
plan b. is to stick with the original white (with or without sparkle)
plan c. is to go with pale (gulf) blue (without sparkle)
i need to make my mind up about the paint as the frame is already with the finishers.
