Red bits look a bit iffy, headset and chain stay protectors. Who cares though, can't see them when you're riding it.

if you were doing it properly you would have ditched the red and got the spring done yellow at the same time as the frame... when will they learn ๐Ÿ™„

You could do with:

New shorter stem - something like a 50mm thomson x4
new seatpost in BLACK (thomson layback would be spot on)
the grey lizard skins peaty grips (red bits would match the seatpost collar)
Lose the red headset and chainstay protectors or get some in black
NEW DECALS
SLX crank

EDIT: - and the spring would look better in bare metal finish

yellow is good. drop the red.

"New shorter stem - something like a 50mm thomson x4"

Why?
It has a 130mm fork, with roughly a 90-100m stem. Its not not ridiculously long, but long enough that the bike ought to be able to climb quite well
Presumably the rider is quite tall so cramping the cockpit will make it pretty poor to ride?

comical ...lets move the weight right back so the rider cant get up hills without wheelying ...

Nice bike! Good job!

From a design point of view, i'd loose the all the red bits! The headset and chainstay protectors make it look untidy too. When money comes available swap these bits, but fit a black adhesive chainstay protector and also an airshock to get the weight down. Some nice components on there and the yellow is a big improvement over the pink!

If you like your ride, why buy a new bike? It's the beginning of a new era of "mend and make do" and what you have done is really cool. We have been throwing good stuff away due to a crazy over consumption habit we have formed over the past couple of decades. The problem is one of compatibility - manufacturers have a hait of making it quite difficult to switch bits around.

I'm about to start my 3rd rebuild. It's great fun searching out bits and getting a bike together. The worst job is stripping a frame ready for refinishing, but for me, the day I wheel the finished article out is more satisfying than when I got a new bike.

Oww.. gauld. The poor guy! Pride and joy placed on here just to be ridiculed and taken to pieces.

... I have to admit though that my first response was one of "Oh my god, what HAS he done?".

But I think it is redeemable.

1st Lose ALL the red stuff and then...

... go for some black, or even better - silver / grey decals, or maybe black + silver + grey decals. Then it might look cool.

Or just live with it. Hell, you probably actually LIKE it that way.

Eddy that is pure class. ignore them. Of course, I compare everything to Gary's famous Christmas Tree K2 Razorback so my eyes may be permanently damaged.

I could just turn the skins inside out to make them black but then I'd be conforming to the masses. Can't believe I didn't think to get the spring done at the same time, DOH!

myfatherwasawolf - oh gawd yeh! gold psylo's mmmmm
shinsplints - lol

it looked better before. and i'm saying that from a position of seeing it before it went off to be painted and assuming the "after" shot would be an improvement.

still, what's done is done. now i would say make the best of it by at least removing everything red and silver from it in favour of black and getting some big black decals for it as well so at least there's some sort of theme.

I like this. It looks (and this is intended as a compliment) oddly similar to the Heckler that John Powell (?), the president of Bristol Uni cycling club, had when I first joined it in 1997. I was hugely impressed with that bike and it had a profound effect on my bike aesthetic sense, which was pretty fixed by the end of the 1990s. A a lot of what has happened since in style terms has not really pushed my buttons. But this looks delightfully retro.

I suspect I would like it even more if the swingarm was mid blue mind... ๐Ÿ™‚

well trail_rat... if his seatpost is up his backside and he has a stupid long stem like that then maybe he could do with a bigger bike? There is no way i would run a stem that long because the rocks we ride over would send me flying. I was squashed in the cockpit on my bike until i put a layback seatpost on and it is fine - in fact having the weight further back gives me more rear wheel traction on the climbs. And i live in calderdale so there are a few climbs.

This Myth that running a shorter stem will make you do wheelies on steep hills is what's comical. unless you don't know how to adjust your riding positon depending on the terrain in which case you're probably best with a longer stem anyway.

It depends how rocky your trails are and how much you value being able to steer.

I like it, apart from the obvious red neoprene accessories. Black would be better for the chainstay protector and chris king would be better for the headset - the headset protectors look disgusting and just hold water in the headset anyway. As for the stem/seatpost - if you're comfy then I can't get why people are criticising.
