I don't remember it being an issue years and years ago.

I don't recall any rides in recent years where ice formed on my eyebrows, and where the mist froze solid on my bike. But I remember when it did and I don't ever recall cold being an issue.

I had a winter jacket, wool mix with a nylon front, Belgian cap, Worth heavy cotton gloves and ragwool socks for overshoes. Always warm and never sweaty.
For long rides in driving snow it was Dachstein mitts and balaclava.

Seems such a fuss these days, I even have three different 'degrees' of winter glove
