Still, I've never seen a rear mech cable touching the front wheel

Maybe as the wheel rotates faster it changes gear?

Shouldn't that be 'Rats Nest'.
Looks a tidy build apart from the cables - why would you not even shorten the gear cable?
It'd probably only cost then about £20 to get the brake hoses shortened at an LBS.

Perhaps the cables are like that to help clear the mud from the front tyre ?
