Had to go for my bone density scan today having found out 2 years ago i had Osteoporosis .Hoping for it to have stayed the same as i went against the advice of the specialist and carried on riding .(After talking to my G.P. )Apparently 4% is classed as a significant improvement , mine has improved by 10% GET IN !!!!!!!Don't need another scan for 5 years instead of the usual 2 .Just thought i'd share . ๐Ÿ˜€

I though regular exercise maintained density. Why did the spec tell you to stop?

regular exercise maintained density.

a lot of cyclists have low bone density - sweating leeches calcium out of the your body and cycling, being low impact, doesn't cause bone growth to compensate.

I had the bone density of a 75 year old man when I fell off my bike and broke my hip - I was 35. A year doing running and other impact activities got that down to a 55 year old man level. I wasn't told to stop cycling but was told I was at increased risk of further breaks untilI got my bone density up.

well done oldfart ๐Ÿ™‚

Buzz spec reckoned mtbing caused too much jarring on my back .His suggestion ?Take up jogging !!!!When i said it didn't make sense he said that direct impact from jogging would help load my bones ?Thing is as well i've since boned up about it (sorry! ) apparently it can be prevented by exposure to sunshine for Vitamin D and doing lots of walking .When i was off work for so long i worked out that as a postman for nigh on 27 years i had done something in the region of 17,000 hours walking !As they say go figure !

Need to get mine redone at some point as well. Mine's because of another condition but my consultant found it highly amusing when I went back to cycling to rebuild my leg- "At your age, there's only 4 reasons someone would have osteoperosis- terrible diet, bad genes, coeliac disease, or over-keen cycling". Oops.
