I ride a Boardman fs and tend to get stuck into a bit of knarl. Riding a local DH run in the weekend and stopped short of a bit of a drop (about 80cm) in fear that I am gonna snap the frame. The singletrack review said that it's not really suitable for hucking and suchlike(not a direct quote). Just wondering if I am gonna break the frame, I am a fairly smooth rider and not too heavy (85 kgs).
The bike rides lovely and is perfect for most of the stuff I ride, just want to know really if I should be taking it a bit easier?
There was a pic of a snapped one sometime back on Bikeradar. On downtube behind headtube welds. It looked very very thin tubing.
An 80cm drop? You should be able to "huck" off that with pretty much any "mountain" bike provided your technique is nailed. I assume the drop is not to flat
Even if it's to flat a HT should be able to cope with that IMO. What's the travel on the Boardman?
It's got 120mm travel but the landing is pretty flat, I have done it on a hardtail plenty of times, but it is a fairly burly hardtail and the Boardman is the most Cross country orientated bike I have ever ridden...
I suppose that whilst it's still in warranty why worry?
It'll be fine.
You'll be fine - I ride my local DH track on my XC bike which has north shore, jumps (to flat), a nice fallen tree with a ramp that goes up and off the tree and a great step down at the end.
Sounds good, my fears are dismissed

Hmmmmmmmm?
Ouch for the rider in Clubbers pic. Would they have been ok if not wearing a helmet?
😉
I snapped my comp fs frame after 14 months of (as much as I dislike the term) aggressive xc, 2 rides per week. Rear swing arms both badly cracked. Took it to Halfords, they told me "it's how you ride it", and told me it's not warranty, but as a favour they would sell me a crash replacement frame for £450!!!
Lots of arguing followed, along with calls to head office etc, long story short, Halfords definition of use of a mountain bike (according to the warranty) "road use and light trekking".
I know it's not what you asked, but I agree they are nice bikes, they are not overly strong, and the warranty is a bloody joke if you do have problems. Ride steady mate.
If you break it then it's time to get a new frame, simples!
You will die, FACT!
