I think I'm finally getting fed up with Stans rims inability to play nicely with tubes.. which are still required IMHO in case of a tyre slash that won't seal when far for me home..happened to me again yesterday (Chilterns flint).

So, I'm speccing a new 29er wheelset, and where I've been using Arch and Arch ex rims for years, I fancy trying get something that still allows me to run tubeless but can also cope with a tube should the need arise. Thing is, I am so out of date on this stuff that I wouldn't know what to look at. Who else is making decent, fairly light but strong tubeless rims that can accept tubes? Cheers!

Mavic, also just go tubeless and carry a spare tube. If you slash a tyre out in the wilds chances are you will probably kill the tube so same problem.

I'm looking too. Apparently stans aren't designed to work with tubes :/

in what way are they not compatible?

ive got 29er arches , and 26er crests & olympics all run with tubes as i got fed up with the tubeless faaffff

Never had a problem with tubes on my Flow EX rims. Never had a problem running tubeless either for that matter. 1,5 years on now I think.

I've been totally unable to get a tube onto a Crest 29er rim with a Racing Ralph..ended up returning the Crest wheel. Similar issue on Arch EX (original Arch is ok...I have both). Some combinations work better than others, but I don't want to be limited to certain tyre/rim combinations just to get a tube in there. I don't intend to ride with tubes...only want to be able to get a tube in there if the tyre doesn't seal following an incident. It's way better to fit a tyre boot and a tube (I always carry both) than walk a long way home.

Personally, as per the thread I linked, my problem is that the tyre beads don't seat which means the tyres don't run true. I did try the "just pump it and run it unseated and it will seat itself" method except it didn;t and I've ruined a tyre.

Hmm. 3 crests: Kenda SB8, Schwalbe Marathon, Conti X Kings, Surly Dirt Wizard.

2 Arch Ex: Conti x king, Conti Mountain Kings

2 Alpha 340: Schwalbe Thunder Burt, conti GP4s

All with tubes, no problem with any of them.

Sometimes they pop up onto the bead quicker, sometimes slower, a bit of talc helps, as does a little bit of manipulation. Some pop up at 20, some at 50. Sometimes I've pumped to the max tyre pressure and left, and they've popped on an hour later.

Pacenti. Think there is a choice of widths that roughly matches the stans range. I've been quite impressed so far with the CL25. There's the wider TL28 and DL31s too if you want wider. Prob the TL28 instead of Arches.

I've just got some eastons, total nightmare to get a Hans dampf on with a tube, much easier without the tube. Just need to find a sealant to run them.

Thoroughly recommend the WTBs, Run them with tubes but they are a proper tubeless rim. Good weight vs strength ratio. Get the I23s rather than the I19s unless its just for XC.

Just had another thought about this: talc will help a lot. both to let the bad move over the tape and the metal, and to let the tyre slide move around the tube.

Has anyone who's had problems tried a liberal application of talc on the tube and tyre bead or rim?

Do you carry a bottle of talc on a ride with you? I appreciate what you;re saying and yes it probably would help when fitting tyres in the garage, but I want tyres to seat properly when out on the trail.

Yup, fair enough.

The talc in the tyre/rim will help you fit another tube when you're out, but I can see it's not the solution if you're tubing a punctured tubeless setup on the trail and you've got jizz everywhere.

Oh dear, just reread earlier post. Bad = bead, move = more. You probably worked that out.

I caught "jazz everywhere" in the last one and nearly left it. ๐Ÿ™‚

The problem you're having could happen with any tubeless rim, as the tyre bead needs to be tighter.
You need to put more pressure in and/or lube the edge of the bead to get it to seat.

Patch the tear with an anchovy or two, top-up the goop if you've lost a substantial amount, and carry on tubeless. Quicker and less messy than putting a tube in.

Yes you can and lots of people have done so. With some tight tyres it's hard to get the bead to seat properly all the way round using a tube, I've simply poured some water on the interface on the trail before now. But anyway, lots of people have had no issues running tubes with Stan's rims including me, others like Julian (NBT) seem to have found it virtually impossible.

I have no idea what it means. I have found the odd rim/tyre combo slightly tricky but with a combination of lube/pumping and sometimes a bit of subtle manipulation at half pressure, they've generally popped on eventually.

Given the number of Stan's rims out there courtesy of Hope Hoops, you have to think that it's not a majority issue or we'd have heard an awful lot more about it. But anyway...
