For some of my touring trips I will go on the train then cycle home over a number of days. Instead of using the train what alternative's are there to transport myself and my bike to a certain destination?

Ride it, or van? Possibly helicopter if you are feeling flush!
If you are planning on riding in the Scottish Highlands then you could take advantage of the service offered by [url= http://www.johnogroatsbiketransport.co.uk/ ]John o'Groats Bike Transport [/url]. It's expensive as a solo traveller but s very attractive for couples. groups and if you are willing to share with others.
Otherwise, find a similar taxi/bike transport service
Bike bus if you're going into Europe.
national express dont carry bikes unless in a bike bag and then at drivers discretion, space, black cabs do, but expensive, stage carriage buses dont
One way hire car.
I've done that before for awkward timings, difficult to reach places, multi-day trips etc.
Sometimes if you plan it right you can drive from home to destination, leave car and all non-essential baggage at hire place then return to it a few days later and re-hire the car for the return journey. Does require a slightly more human touch with the hire car company though, most now are too automated to consider such a common sense approach.
Could try a lift sharing website but state you will have bag and bike. Long shot but worth a punt.
Bags are no good if you're taking a bike. Trust me I do this a lot. Trains work out sadly. Eventually.

Thanks for the info. Didn't even think of one way vehicle hire. Just got quote for one way van hire and it works out cheaper and quicker for 2 of us instead of 2 train tickets.
