Had a Gates belt on my commuter SS since Feb and loved it...never even cleaned the bike once and it still worked perfectly! Just got an alfine hub built up and got it fitted but the chainline is out a wee bit: the belt is off the front sprocket by about 3-4mm inwards (i.e towards the frame). It doesn't come off, or vary at all, it just sits there all the time, and seems to work fine.

Normally I'd just move spacers on the BB to adjust the chainset inwards a wee bit to adjust, but because the front sprocket is so thick, the sprocket is already as close to the chainstay as possible, so I physically can't move the sprocket inwards any further.

Is there a way to move the alfine rear sprocket outwards a wee bit, or is it set in position? If not, what are my options? I could move from a 55 to 50 tooth front sprocket but that makes the bike pretty spinny then, especially as I think I've got the smallest rear sprocket already (22), plus I don't really fancy buying a new sprocket and belt (£££).

Thanks 🙂

Move the whole hub across in the bike a little by replacing the final nut on the drive side with a slimmer one? There might even be a washer you can manage without...

Edit: that photo doesn't show the gear mechanism, so check for clearance.

Great thanks...will check that tonight It's pretty tight back there as the sprocket is so damn wide too!

Edit- this doesnt bode well though if its talking about the same thing:

Read in a few places that people have used spacers on the non drive side to move the hub outwards a wee bit. Probably a stupid question but I can't see how that works though as there's a finite amount of space between the dropouts, so wouldn't adding spacers just make it too tight to go in? Especially as nothing can be removed from the drive side?

Yes you would need to remove from drive side and add to brake side to maintain same overall width...

Well I'm not sure how it fixed it, but I got a cheapo Alfine chainset (been meaning to replace the square taper bb for ages anyway), and after a few tests with spacers in different positions managed to get the chainline perfect! The weird thing is I don't understand how that fixed it, as the front sprocket looks to be just as close to the chainstay as previously so I don't think it's moved any further inwards 😕
