Hi
Does anyone know if you can push back up / ride back up a fire-road to re-do the final descent of Y Wal at Afan?
(Post-Lockdown obvs)

Cheers

You can drive up to the bike park so yep, definitely. Don't know if there's a better way

Yup you can. I did an enduro there a few years ago that did exactly that. Wasn't too back actually.

There's a bridleway from glynncorrwg goes past a radio mast, I think that might do what you want.

You will want a very low gear.

If you put that into Google Maps on satellite view, you'll see a faint-ish track heading directly north off the old railway track that you finish The Wall on. It joins another more obvious looking track at a T junction and takes you up to the skills park.

All these tracks are very obvious on the ground, and also very steep! (The one after the T junction is the bridleway called The Wall - which is where the MTB trail gets its name. It's all ridable, depending on how fit you are. We used to race up it in XC races years ago, but it defeated me when I went up there before Xmas!)

Turn back up the valley, first road leading off to the left, runs parallel to the final decent, left when you reach junction, up steep hill comes out at the bike park.

Thanks for the info everyone & for the maps coords idlejon
I haven't ridden there for about 7 years but had a vague idea that I could end up back near the skills park.

I'm quite directionally challenged.
When I finish the final descent & plop out on the main road/fire-road, do I turn left or right?
I'm thinking left but it's 50 50.

One final question. I currently only have a single speed DH bike.
Does the final descent (ZigZag?) have many climbs or is it mostly downhill?
It's been so long I can't remember.
Cheers again for any info

Turn left back up the valley, bit peddly to start, not much and peddly bit in middle, flat rather than climb

Zig Zag is a little pedally (and really needs to be ridden fast to work). It's really nice but if you can't keep your speed up it loses a lot of fun (I've ridden it broken tired and it just felt like all effort and no reward, I've ridden it fresh and it was speeder bike awesome)

There's an alternative descent which is quite spicy, it's got signage at the top but I think it's basically a formalised #enduro stage? It's a very different beast.

^ that descent is called Stage 4. How hard can it be I thought to myself?

How I chuckled as I walked, fell and staggered my way down it on foot while trying to stop my bike cartwheeling down the hill.
Waaay beyond my pay grade these days!

H at the bottom of the decent turn left and take the first left fire road. It’s rideable just

It's like someone cut out a slice of tweed valley and transported it to Wales. And then put a sign at teh top saying it's "black graded" and forgot to add "but not like every other black graded trail in the entire country"
