I'm leaving Kent tomorrow with two friends for a trip to Afan forest, Staying at Afan lodge.
This is are first biking trip for us all and just wanted your advice on which trails are a must.
Even thou we leave tomorrow morning its still about 4/5 hour drive so prob not going to get any riding in but have two full days and depending on are back sides may get a cheeky ride in fri morning.

So if this was your first bike break which trails in Afan would you do first and why?

If I was you i'd stop for a couple of laps of FoD or Cwmcarn on the way.

I'd probably do W2 at Afan although Skyline final descent is also good

Well as the choice is now Whites, the wall (done together this is call "W2") or the skyline.
My favourite is the Whites, which I happily do a couple of time back to back (admittedly with a break between), though you can do the final descent of the skyline from the top of the whites climb as an alternative.
You have enough time to do all 3, easily and repeat depending on how knackered (sore) you are.
Though I'd suggest you will be better spending your friday driving down to Cwmcarn and completing the Twrch trail (not far off the m4), to get the most out of your trip.

As I posted to you in the other Afan thread 2.5 days at Afan and you'll go crazy IMO. I drove 3.5 hrs to Afan rode Wall and Whites then drove home, that's a full day's riding but shows what can be done, I'm not a fit or fast rider (not recommended due to tiredness on drive back btw). That was my first UK trail centre riding.

My intinery would be

Leave early and ride Wall first afternoon. Alternatively ride red at Cwmcarn as a warm up (1 hour before Afan) and arrive at Lodge for shower/dinner.

The Wall is the best intro trail at Afan for a first timer.

Day 2 drive to Brechfa and ride red trail there plus Cwm Rhaeadr or something else.
Day 2 alternative W2 at Afan

Day 3 ride Cwmcarn on way home or Whites/Wall at Afan

jambalaya's advice is sound.
To be an Afan completist though , you have to do Skyline , which people criticise for being a bit dull.I thought it was ok .
I would do the W2 first and then Whites again for kicks.
Also go to Cwmcarn - either on the way there or back.

Quick lap of Cwmcarn XC on the journey up, you will have time.

W2 at Afan on Weds.

Either same again on Thurs if you really liked it or head over to Brechfa.

Call in at Cwmcarn again or Forest of Dean on your way home.

Thanks so far for the advice.

May sound a stupid question but i shall ask any way.. where abouts is this Cwmcarn trail have not heard of this until now and as everyone has mentioned it i would be a fool not to do it.

I think that's overly negative - if you've travelled all the way from Kent riding a trail you've only ridden once before is hardly going to bore you senseless. There's a lot of people ride the same trails every week.

The lodge is great and right in the middle of things. Getting in the car to drive somewhere else seems a waste. CwmCarn is worth visiting if you've got half a day but I'd be tempted just to make the most of having riding at your door and get to the Afan Lodge.

What progress has there been with the revamped Penhydd - is none of it open yet?

I was there on Saturday, and did the whole of Skyline for the first time and I have to say it didn't do a lot for me. In between the initial climb (shared with Whites) and the final descent, it felt like it was about 20 miles of forest road climbing. I need to spend some time with a GPS figure out where the heck all the height went, because it really didn't seem to add up! As always, it was nice to be out on the bike in the sun, but I had a lot more fun doing a final loop of Whites at the end.

I did a really good full day at Afan last summer: Whites Climb, Black Run, then follow W2 for a loop round the Wall and back for the Whites descent, then back up the Whites climb, Black Run again, then along the forest road to pick up the Skyline descent.

That covers everything except a handful of singletrack sections on Skyline.

Ride to the Wall using the old railway line (between the two Afan centres), do the Wall and then either return back to Glencorrig along the valley or use the W2 link and then up the White/Skyline climb.

You can then take the Sustrans link across to the top to the Skyline descent, and back down pretty much the best down.

Glad your enjoying, try to do the Skyline descent if you can, it will complete the trip.

Come back soon, new green with a blue section coming in April and the revival of Penhydd next year but hopefully sooner should bring Afan to it's former glory.

White's climb is the bomb.
