Hi,

I'm looking for some advice on which rims to get on some new wheels I am planning to buy.
I'm going for Hope Hoops on Pro 2 hubs as they are just too good value to miss, but cannot decide which rims would best suit me.
I am bending towards the Stan's rims as I would go down the tubless route using standard tyres like my current set up, which I am very happy with.
I am thinking either the 355 or Flow rims.

I am a 240lb rider (aiming to be around 180lb over the next few months)
Bike is a 2008 Kona Blast Deluxe hardtail with a Tora 318 Solo Air fork
I ride local trails, bridleways, plus some trail centre outings, so the odd rock garden northeshore ets. Not doing much in the way of jumping etc, just a few small ones.

Logically I'm thinking the Flow due to my current weight, but the rims which came with the bike (Alex Ace18) which I am presuming will not be ultar strong, have coped fine for that last 18 months, just the bearings going now. So I'm wondering in the 355 would be OK.

Anyone got any views or advice on this?

I weigh similar and went for the flows, but that was with Alps trips and some light DH use in mind as well as XC and trail centre stuff. Given how much I weigh I wasn't too bothered about saving a bit of weight on the bike with the lighter rims.

Only had a very brief ride on them so far but they seem really nice - give the tyre a really good wide profile. Inflating tyres tubelessly is REALLY easy too. Even non-tubeless Bonty tyres went up really easily.

355s would probably survive fine but the Flows will be a stiffer, stronger wheel.

I'd definitely go with the Flows.

You're going to lose 60lbs in the next few months - that's over 4 stone!

Better save your money for a whole new wardrobe?

I'm just over 200 lbs and I use the flow. It's stiffer and it gives bigger tyres a much more stable footprint. It might not be the lightest rim but at 470 grms, it's ceretainly not heavy

Yep that's what I have been advised to do, may take a good few months though, maybe even a year to get that low. I was down to 15 stone once before, but that was just dieting, and with no exrecise it went back on over a couple of years. Rding up hills is a good incentive to loose weight, it hurts lugging 17 stone up hill I can tell you!!

That's why I have been buying cheap Tenn stuff for winter riding.

Looks like the Flows win the vote then. Best get them on order before I need a wardrobe full of new clothes ๐Ÿ˜†

Have gone from 14.5st to 12.5st in 15 months through exercise and tracking of my weight in excel on Mondays and Fridays and doing a 3 point rolling average (geeky). Have Pro 2's on 355's comming for an xc race bike (look wider than 717's) but would have gone flows for my Peaks / Alps / big ride bike.

In your case I'd go Flows (Winstanley are cheapest but expect to wait a couple of weeks).
