MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
I've been signed up to do a 400k Audax this weekend (don't ask why), and there are about 15 controls that need to be hit. I'm worried riding through the Dales in the pitch black in a sleep deprived state is a perfect recipe for missing these so I'd like my Garmin to give me an alert that I'm near a control if possible. A quick google doesn't give me any solutions to this unless I pay for RidewithGPS premium subscription. Does anyone know of any other ways to make this work?
Thanks in advance
What sort of Garmin? If you create the gpx track in Connect then you can add "Course Points" which will cause an alert on the compatible Garmin device.

Thanks Scotroutes
It's an edge explore - do you know if this is a compatible one?
The Edge Explore will display course points but I've only ever used them with an organiser's file created with a paid rwgps account.
I have the data screen set up to show laps rather than total distance, and reset at each control. Your route card will show the distance to the next control so you can easily see on your computer how far you have to go. This breaks the ride into manageable chunks and will tell you when to keep an eye out for the control.
Good luck! 400s are absolutely brutal...
One more thing: the Edge Explore has a woeful battery life so be sure to keep it topped up. They get upset if allowed to go flat when running a course.
Thanks both - I'll make a route through connect and add some checkpoints to see if it'll flash up. I don't see why not so should work.
Ransos - aware of the awful battery life, thanks for pointing out. My workaround is to plug it in to a battery pack that's living in a restrap stem bag. Will do this overnight so I can have the backlight on without the battery dying within a few minutes!
If you're plugging it in when riding then I'd use a new cable, they work loose otherwise.
My memory is a bit dim on this so appols for the half arsed info...
IIRC (maybe) the course points only transfer when cable connected rather than with WIFI. This was with RWGPS rather than Basecamp as I don't use the latter. It was a bit puzzling armt first as I couldn't get the course points to transfer. The other issue I had was there's no 'alert radius' setting eg the unit pings at warning at 100m to go etc and the icon on the screen is tiny. My old eTrex let's you do this but not a 1030..
Experiment before it matters to ensure it does what you're looking for.
