So I have a old 700C hybrid that's basically been sat on the turbo for ages. 1 1/8 steerer and 2.4kg of non functioning fork
So I bagged a used CX fork off ebay and took off the non functioning 2.4kg weight ... loads of clearance for the wheels and the steerer is plenty long but it's dropped the front 3-4cm ish...
Aim was more of a commuter but ... well it's ending up more gravel riding at the moment with the steeper HA and superlong stem it's super twitchy...

I could probably add 10mm with a external headset ... but does anything exist I can stick under the crownrace and be half safe?

I would fit an angleset / slackset/ slackerising headset.

Can you recommend one for a straight 1 1/8th steerer fork/headtube ?

Hmmm... Superstar do one ... I'd have to measure to see how it will fit (and it's £50 on a low cost project)
I'm not sure if its only HA or the drop in stack has just affected geometry otherwise...

Not to the degree you need. You need to replace the fork with one that has a longer axle to crown length. Anything else is just a poor patch.
