MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
I have never had a problem before with 9 speed chains and I found that even if the chain breaks I could fix it with a magi-link and it would continue fine for months.
I switched to 10sp last year and built up a new bike in feb. since then the chain has broken five times. I repaired with inserted links. What's going on? Is a chain repaired with a spare link weaker than repaired with a magi-link? I have been running a SRAM chain on a xtr cassette & rear mech and XO chainset so could mixing brands be causing the problem?
Other rants: does anyone else have a problem with 10sp magi links? They're impossible to connect / disconnect!! Any tricks of the trade are welcome. And finally does 10sp make chain-suck worse or is it the XO chainset (always used XT before).
Thanks. I feel better now.
Cheers
Dickie
Is yours a Shimano chain?
Not sure about magi links but SRAM ones are not separable. KMC make re-usable joining links for 10 speed.
SRAM. The SRAM 9sp were separable but 10sp seem impossible. I will look at KMC thanks.
Any comments about chains repaired with spare links? I am guessing the chain must be weaker where it is repaired.
It'll be made slightly weaker by driving the pins out and back in again, but nothing to worry about for me. I've broken a SRAM quick-link in the past so they're not indestructable.
