My winter frame build has stalled 🙁

(ETA - And my browser is still uploading unfinished posts )

Plan was to build up a VN Taureg as a replacement for my cracked Airborne Lucky Strike. Pretty much the same frame , so planned a straight parts swap...

However, a few tube size differences (notably seat tube), has required a few items to be sourced, which has delayed the build.

Brakes though...these have been the main problem

The Avids on the old bike (and on my other frames) have become a right royal pain in the backside. the fronts always end up sticky and the rears seem to pull to the bars before anything happens.

I originally ran Hope Mono M4s on the Airborne, which were very succesful. So the question is - service the Avids, and put up with them, or look for a new pair of xc type discs?

Need recommendations for lightweight trail / xc brakes. Hope now seem to have a confusing array of Mini / M4 type options. Are they still as user serviceable ? (a quality I always liked in Hopes)

Damn - too late for an edit.

A quick browse on CRC suggests that Hope Tech X2 Evo might be in the right sort of bracket..

Any opinions?
Are these any good?
or best sticking with the elixirs?

I see rotors are additional - are they specific Hope X2 rotors or will any previous Hope or other make rotors do the job (depending on size / mount adapters etc)?

I have Tech M4 and I love them - the Tech lever is a little finicky but Hopes CS sent me some new seals - I'd prob go for the Race XC TBH as the tech levers are quite big and mess with your shifter setup a little 🙂

If you go for hope they work with any other brand of rotor, just make sure that the rotor is the appropriate size (160, 183 or 203). They're still as user serviceable as always, with all the spares available from hope.

Or go with a pair of Magura brakes and never* need to touch them......

* apart from new pads every now and then!

Any suggestions on which Magura brakes?

I currently run three pairs of Louise brakes (all slightly different) and find them to be fantastic.

Just my 2 cents though.

I have Hope Tech X2 on one bike and the new Shimano XT brakes on my other, the XT brakes for the money are fantastic, much stronger braking than the Hope (although not as pretty, especially when you can pick them up from the some of the german sites for £130 the pair.

Have gone for the Race X2s

Need to work out what rotors to pair them up with now. Have a selection from 160 through to 185. I suspect that this choice will be based on what will fit with minimum faff - ie no adapters!
