As title really do i need to remove my x01 cranks to install a new chain ring ??

I think you do as they won't fit over the arms.

I didn't. Went from a 32 to a 30, no trouble. Just slipped the little beggar right over the crank arm and pedal.

Great thanks new ring should be here tomorrow just hate taking the sram bb30 cranks off. Will update tomorrow

They can changed without removing the cranks but for anything under 32t it's a bit fiddly, but definitely possible.
