Does it look wrong? I don't suppose you can notice much difference in stiffness, I just don't want the crown to look lost.

you can see the crown is fairly narrow but it's not the end of the world.

Looks better with an external lower headset cup.
I don't have a photo to hand to back up my theory though.

Not on most HT frames I've looked at.
The 1 1/8th steerer I have just built into a Carbon 456 looks very much alive.
