Would like to hear opinions from people who have tried both if possible.

Does the RC2L Damping of the Lyrik match the new Fit Rc2 damping of the fox?. The fork will be matched with a CCDB on the rear.

Having owned and been happy with a Van RC2 im tempted to go straight for the new 2012 option but the U-turn on the Lyrik would be handy for the really steep climbs.

Any experience between mission control and mission control DH dampers in the Lyriks?

I'd probably buy Marzocchi 55 RC3 Ti... which I did.

I've borrowed friends bikes with Van's and Coil Lyrik's but never been impressed by the performance over and above my 36 Float RC2 (no 2012 forks obviously). The only forks I have found to be better than my Float is the Bos Deville and the 55 RC3 Ti. Much as I'd like to buy the Deville my budget only reached as far as some bargain Marzocchi's... but that wasn't your question 😳

I've only just fitted the Zokes and so far they are better than the Float by a fair chunk, but I stupidly had my rear air shock on and the fork far outshone the back end... later this week I'll try the bike with my CCDB on which should be a much better match... Ti coil front and back 8)

I rode Fox 36 Van RC2's (2010/2009 I can't remember) all last year and found them to be very good but recently I changed for a set of Marzocchi 55 RC3 Ti's. They Marzocchi's are a definite improvement so far, they are plush without being divey which is apparently due to well sorted damping! I've only been using them for a few weeks but rode a big rocky descent on Saturday and was very, very impressed with the feel. A definite improvement over the Vans/

Thanks for the reply,i considered the 55 but due to liking a pie or two found that i didnt get on with them too well when the air preload was added.

The Deville was another contender but having not had the chance to try them i was worried about flex from the 34mm stantions when hitting the really rough rocky terrain.

The only experience i have had with Rockshox is a motion control pike and a quick go on a motion control oem Lyrik,obviously they are not going to compare with mission control.What i did find with the motion control was the low speed compression made little difference up to a point, then all of a sudden made the forks rather harsh with no inbetween point.Is this the same on the mission control?.

Thanks Doug,what sort of weight are you guys?.Im about 15st fully kitted,just wondering if the 55 would be better if i had more time to have a play and could spend longer on set up.

FROUK (old sheffield clubnight, not swear filter avoidance, honest!) ME! I clicked on this thread thinking it might be of interest after finding out how much custom tuneing would cost front + rear on my Pitch (circa. £350 btw for service and push tune x 2 at TF), then went on google shopping. I knew RRP's had gone up but there always used to be places offering 50% off, and RS always used to be good value compared to Fox, but both the forks mentioned are £800+ at the cheepest shops!

Thisisnotaspoon, if you look around there are quite a few deals around on Lyriks.2012 ones can be had for just over £600 or according to google shopping just over £500 from one of the german shops.

Totally agree with you though regarding price of forks now,as with everythine else mtb it is a total rip off.

i had both, the 2010 vans vs the 2011 lyriks though

lyriks won for me, probably the nicest forks ive owned. paired nicely with the ccdb i was running at the time too.

noidea. I weight about 83kg in just my nat king. I generally carry quite a lot of gear and water so would guess about 90-95kg all kitted up. I'm not running any air, but I have heard that the air preload can make the older forks a bit spikey... I'm not sure if this is an issue with the new 2012 (mine are 2010). Certainly without the air preload they are v. smooth, although strangely they don't feel it in the old car park push-on-the-bars test.

I've had and used extensively the Lyrik, Van 36 and now have the BOS Devile.

The BOS is easily a better performing fork, but it is more sensitive to set up; for example if you don't cycle the fork after setting the air pressure, then it doesn't work properly. The range of damping on the low and high speed compression circuits is excellent and the TRC feature is also quite useful in certain situations, notably on steep switchbacks where you don't need a lot of travel and the TRC keeps the fork propped up and allows you to really trust that the front won't dive and tuck under.

Between the Fox and the RS, there's little between them in my view damping wise. The Fox is quite a bit lighter, the Lyrik is much easier to maintain and has more versatility with the U-Turn to fine tune the ride height.

The BOS fork may not be as stiff as the Fox, but it's as stiff as the Lyrik and the service schedule is less demanding than the Fox.

I can't comment on the 55 apart from to say that if you're outside of the sweet spot with your weight, you end up having to run a lot of air pre-load and people who've had them say this reduces how plush the fork feels.

I've not had fox 36's but i love my lyriks on my FIve- the only problem i had with them was a damper seal go which caused them to drop the damper oil into lowers. This was resolved with a new seal kit for £20 and an hour jiggery pokery.

Really simple to work on them, if I can work on them anyone can. I've got the DH damper in an had no issues what so ever and have the coil uturn. After loosing quite a bit of weight due to road biking i now need a new spring but there are loads of second hand ones doing the rounds that you can pick up or swap with people.

A friend has RC3 Ti 55's on a Pitch and he loves them - he has had no issues in the last 18 month or so with them.

I've always used RS forks as Fox are soo expensive, however when I damaged my RS Sektors last year I needed some new forks, I was looking at the Lyriks and 36s too. In the end I went for some 2012 36 Van RC2 FIT Kashimas, yes they are more expensive but I got them on 12 months interest free, so far I'm pretty impressed with them but don't knw how they compare to the Lyriks. The Kashima coating did it for me, they look bling!

Make sure you equalise the air chambers after you've set the pressure by gently cycling the fork a few times immediately afterwards.
