Finally gaining traction?

I have a new bike arriving and it has Race Face 35mm bar/stem as standard. Other than lights and a Garmin it's unlikely I'll be fitting anything else to the bars. Any reason to replace when new or do I just accept it's another "standard" I have in my stable?

Why would you want to? They aren't any heavier and they are stronger.

I've been running 35mm bars for the last couple of years and I love them. I see no downside, although I admit I'm not a fan of bar furniture. Garmin and Exposure mounts are both available in 35mm though so I'm happy 🙂

Is there actually a benefit though? Not exactly seeing 31.8s snapping with regularity

The benefit is in wider bars at the same or better strength without using thicker tubes and increasing weight.

If you follow the idea back, you'll see that Easton refused to make anything wider than around 720 for years while they were using 31.8 as they couldn't make the bars they wanted at the strength they wanted them to be - to keep the component weight down, they felt strength vs a 680-720 31.8 bar was compromised. Likewise, RF's Atlas and Turbine stuff just suddenly got lighter going to 35mm over the 31.8 models they replaced.

It's a simple case of stuff getting better through evolution in my eyes.

My first set came about by accident simply because I was being a tart and got a bargain. I was so impressed with the 35mm that I've stuck with it and fitted it on my other bikes. As I said, I see no downside if you're already looking at Atlas-priced components, although note that RF are offering the much cheaper Aeffect in 35mm too.

:EDIT: Beaten to it by all of 43 seconds!

The idea with 35mm was that you could go wider and retain the same stiffness without having to add weight (in some instances actually reducing the weight) rather than simply increasing strength.

As I understand it (using a Raceface Sixc as an example) the 35mm bar at 800mm wide will feel pretty much the same as the 31.8mm at 780 in terms of stiffness, but will be lighter and wider, which seems to be what people want these days.
If you wanted to put the 31.8mm version out to 800mm, you'd either have to thicken it up to make sure it's just as strong, or accept that it'd feel a bit noodly.

All of that is pretty much irrelevant though, as 35mm simply looks cooler. That should be reason enough to keep it 🙂

I can't see the point. Bike I bought came with a 35mm stem. I had a perfectly good 31.8 setup I used instead.

Bar options are pretty limited in 35mm too.
