Hi

How much, percentage-wise, is a 2-year-old but unused MTB frame worth?

The frame in question is a 2007 year-model steel hardtail, but it's obviously been sitting around in a bike shop for the past 2 years, completely unused and unmarked. It's mostly the same spec as the current (2009) model but with sublte changes.

My wife's just bought a frame which was supposedly a 2009 model, but they've sent us a 2007 model.

It's not worth the full retail price of a 2009 model frame obviously, but what percentage of the new frame value is it worth?

(the way I look at it, is comparing it to a 2-year-old car with zero miles on it - you'd never pay full new retail price for that).

Any help appreciated before I approach the shop!

Cheers
Ally

Although IMO I'm not sure the actual bike in question matters, it's the principal of the thing!

Send it back or ask for half price. If you were to sell it in a years time it'll be worth little and few people will believe it's true age - especially if it's an expensive frameset with different colours for each product year.

i would call/go to the shop and ask them what they will do about it??? they may be suprised that it was a 07 bike and offer to swap it or give you some cash!!

an 09 frame is £341 so i would be looking to pay £250 max for a good 07 frame!

Cheers.

I've already e-mailed the shop (last night) with exactly what solomanda's suggested: half-price, or it gets returned at their expense. Pretty much my same thoughts about looking at the selling on value should be choose to sell it on in a year or 2.

It's actually a very nice frame, despite it being the 2007 model one, so we'll keep it if we reach an acceptable price. I think £175 (50%) is fair enough. Calling them later so we'll see what happens.

I would be very annoyed if a shop had tried to get a way with sending me a 2007 which was sold as a 2009 frame...if they did know it was an 2007, it demonstrates a certain contempt for the customer that they would expect them to ignorantly not notice the difference.
