Loads of wheel deals out there; Wiggle, Chain Reaction & Merlin are good places to start.

If you want good value then build your own.

I built a set of 1400 gram wheels for £150.

Admittedly 26" and the rims were a bargain at £22 each but very cheap for 1400 grams and plenty strong enough for XC.

Stans Alpine rims, Novatech D711/2, DT Revolution spokes.

I already have a £650 set of 1450g race wheels, so to save those from damage Ive been searching for something probably matching your brief to use as 1750g winter / trail wheels which could also be used for racing spares and will sit in the car on race day with alternate tyres (i got caught out by a dry race turning to a mud fest this year) and came down to the following two based on servicability, weight, strength and cost < £300 second hand.

a) A pair of Stans arch on Hope pro 2 evo
b) A pair of Kinesis Maxlight IX9

Neither come up often 2nd hand though, are about £400 new on the above mentioned sites. I collect b) tomorrow after about 4 months of waiting for some to appear in the classifieds.

You can find XT's (cup & cone, centrelock) and Mavics cheaper, but you suffer with the exlusive fittings of the former sand the weight of the latter - although happy hunting if you can find something cheaper & better!

I got Bonty Rythmn Elite off here for £70, they are 1800g. I thought that was quite lardy.

Superstar are selling off Pacenti CL25 and TL28 wheelset for about £135 (with 20% code until the 18th)- no published weight but I'd guess at around 1800g. Been trying to talk myself out of a pair by reading reviews that say they dent easily (and ignoring the ones that say they're fine 😀 )

b) A pair of Kinesis Maxlight IX9

Several grumbles about the Kinesis cx wheels are appearing on the tripster thread...

IX29 are the MTB wheels though.

What are the grumbles?

Stans crest on pro evo 2?

Personally I got nervous of the various 'net comments regarding the flex in those.

Lol, I've had a couple off sets Kryton57 and if they can take my fat arse and bad riding then they cant be all that bad, but seriously, used them on my work bike/winter hardtail for 18 months, never had a problem with the front and rear needing truing once.

I'm just building the following:-

Front:
Hub: Novatec D771SB - 158g
Rim: Velocity Blunt SS 29" - 399g
Spokes: ACI Alpina Black DB - 230g (32 spokes including brass nipples)
Total: 787g

Rear:
Hub: Novatec D772SB - 271g
Rim: Velocity Blunt SS 29" - 399g
Spokes: ACI Alpina Black DB - 229g (32 spokes including brass nipples)
Total: 899g

Total for wheels: 1686g

All measured weights with the Blunt SS rims coming out at 26g below the claimed weight by Velocity. That must be a first!

Pretty decent I'd say for 30mm 29er rims with an ID of 26.6mm.

Cost?

And that's all nice if you are not a ham fisted diy disaster like me.

Rims £58 each, hubs £60 the pair off eBay (new), spokes £37.50.

Total cost £213.50 plus several hours of my time (I'm not a pro wheelbuilder)

I've just finished the front and it built up really nicely. I've laced the rear and will probably tension and true tomorrow.

I just bought one of their TL28 builds for £135 (26" though). I was really torn between these and the £30 more expensive Arch Ex build but fancied giving these a pop.

I haven't been able to weigh them / ride them yet and won't until the end of the month, but supposedly they weigh around 1750g. Looking forward to hitting the trails on them.
