Hi everyone,
What are you running on those badboy 29ers ?
Personally got 32/20 but looking to go 32/18 as spin out too quickly and fancy more kneecap busting up hill

34x20
I did 47km in three hours on a trailquest recently (did I mention I ride trailquests ?) and you can see there's a sort of cap on my maximum sustained speed of about 24km/h.

I only had to get off to push twice, so I'm thinking of going for maybe 34x19 or 34x18.
32x18 works for me, trying to train into a 32x17...

@ bunnerscj: forks etc turned up this AM. Ta muchly!

32/20 deep mud/snow
32/18 for the other two weeks.....
(it's the law,btw)
48/16 for the road bike, 32/18 offroad
34/18 here, fine for everything that I am willing to ride up
Doing the opposite of the OP, been running 32:18 but following yesterdays knee busting mudfest I'm going to go 32:20
32:19 was 32:18 for ages, but put a 19 on for a race and really enjoy it.
32/18 for me as well. But want to try a 19t to make the steeper stuff easier.
32:19 here. A bit spinny on the flat but can get up almost anything where I ride (Chilterns & Wiltshire). Was also ok on Skyline and Whites the other day, with a couple of short walkie bits.
32/22 and 11-34 - a bit spinny maybe so I am considering changing the 32 chainring for a 34.
33-18.Kept bouncing between 32-18 and 32-17 and then I saw 33t cheap on crc......bingo!
I ride 32/22 and have tried most other things too. 32/20 is ideal for most off roading. I find that with 32/22 you don't need to pick your ride so much and can get up even the nasty climbs with a bit of effort. When things get really soggy and wet you can still plough on and unless you're on the flat all of the time I don't think that you lose out elsewhere. When going downhill you soon outrun your gearing anyway and on other bits you find yourself sat spinning more than having to stand and push. I ride with four other guys on the same rides one runs 32/18, one 32/23 and the other two 32/20. Everyones cadence is different and us with lower gearing never have to push. What we all have suites us as individuals, some like to spin and others like to push big gears, it's the same when we are on our geared bikes, we all select different gears. How do you like to ride is the question, what's right for you may be different for someone else.
LOL another 33t user here!
33:20 at the mo, but on the lookout for a decent 32t soon.
32:19 here too. Started off with 32:18 but the 19t suits me better.
32/16 for commuting and local(not hilly) stuff and 32/18 for Cannock and White Peak stuff
32:19 seems good for me.
Got a 20 to try but never got round to fitting it yet.
Paul.
32/18
i'm 32/18 also some interesting thoughts on gears here http://twentynineinches.com/2011/01/06/thinking-out-loud-about-gearing-for-29ers-part-ii/ sorry url tool has vanished for me
Tried 32/18, then 32/20, settled on 32/19.
34 x 19
anyone got a surly or on one rear cog - 18 tooth ?
Wanna change from 20 !
I run 36:19 but thats not normal.
Go 2:1 and then add two teeth at the back..
32:18
34:19
36:20
100:52 etc
You are never in the right ratio for long on a one speed, so it's ok to gear it a bit off. You will cope. And pushing the bike is OK.
Odd thing. No mention of "one speed" in the original question. Guess it goes without saying?
36/20 everywhere
22/32/44 x 11-34.
At last, I'm niche.
Thanks for the stickers Charlie. My 6 yr old is also now bike proud!
