[Closed] 26" to 650B adapter? - must be possible

It would need to be bike specific, but I wonder if it would sell?

I'm not changing until I have to. I'm still loving the 9 speed shimano compatibility.

250 layers of yellow tape should do it.

I'm lost

which bit are we adapting. The frame to accomodate the wheel. A 26 rim so it can take a 650b tyre

I'm sure 650b wheels will fit any 26 frame or fork, perhaps with slightly narrower tyres

yes you can squeeze bigger small tyres into frames and forks with less clearance. Is that what you meant?

Yep, done several times that I've seen, but I can't show you pictures as I didn't take any..
I've seen it done on a Yeti-it was tight but fitted.
A GT that had some sort of funky custom prototype dropout made to space the axel but not to alter the BB height-looks very interesting..

There's a list here of 26" frames that will take 650b

What's the point? You get a bigger thin tyre with almost the same diameter as a small fat tyre.

I'm not being argumentative - well, okay, maybe I am - but surely if it fits the same frame (albeit with reduced clearances) then it's the same size, so the same performance? Or worse, because you've now got a thin tyre and no mud clearance.

27.5" is a homeopathic tyre size.

I'd be interested in the relative weights of 650B wheel with skinny tyre v 26" with fatter one?

Well in that case just bung in a 700c touring wheel ๐Ÿ˜‰

Will have a few pictures for comparative purposes later, just need to get the 29er wheel done first for all 3 sizes ๐Ÿ˜‰

Might need to let the air out of the tyre first for the 29" one. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I guess if you already run thin light-tread tyres, moving to 650b might give some advantage, but my feeling is probably just as much difference between 2 brands of tyre.

A mate has 650bs on his C456. There's acres of room, even for a proper tyre; in fact you can (just) squeeze a 29er in there. I wouldn't bother as can see the advantages of big wheels and little wheels and I like having bikes with a proper contrast.

Isn't it more of a fork issue?

A 1st edition Soul frame will accomodate 27 and a bit no problem. Unfortunately, the RS Revelations wouldn't unless a smaller tyre went on ... and if it did, what have I gained?

The biggest issue has to be the change in geometry, it's going to raise the BB so what's the point?

some one should make 650b diameter tyres with a 26" bead - to allow 26" frame/fork/ wheels to run 650b.

Well my tyres look like some 650 ones when along side.
It would help if they ever stop making 26" tyres but still wont help the fact that you will have rubbish clearance if your preference is for anything approaching a decent tyre size.

I tried 650 not really convinced enough to want to remove clearance from a perfectly good frame.

Agreed. And the same for 29ers so they too can benefit from the brilliance of 650b.

Are there plans yet for a wheel size that sits between 650b and 29er, sort of the best of both worlds compromise for people still havering over wheel selection?

That would really be marketing triumph. They are already made. they are called large tyres....

About 27.5" would probably do it ๐Ÿ˜‰

Shame you have to take the saddle off to get the wheel to fit. Baddum-tish, I'm here all week

If you run 2.4/2.5" 26" tyres your almost running 650b/27.5" anyway... i.e. 2.4" Rubber Queens are bigger than most 2.2" 650b/27.5" tyres.

I'm sure my Mmmbop would take a 27.5" wheel but I don't want to go raising the already rather high BB.

Thinking of buying a 27.5" hardtail so I can run big 26" tyres and lower the BB... but can't thnk of any frames ๐Ÿ™„

That Remedy looks remarkably normal with that set up.

I may build my next 29er wheel with an offset hub, to get the best of [s]both[/s] three worlds.

I can then rig up a Reverb to auto-raise/lower in time with the wheel rotation. If I get it right then bike should move like a circus bike beneath me whilst I remain perfectly level.

2.25 Nobby nic 650 (R/H side) and 2.4 26" fat albert comparsion.

You'd have to also factor tyre deflection though.

I'd say a 2.4 Rubber Queen would be the same height as that 650b NN.

I've been running a 2.4 FA for the last year - does that make me a trend-setter?

Mind you I also have a 26x3 tyre here if I really want a bigger wheel.

I put a big tyre on the front of my 26er to give it some of that 29er feel that I like.
It just made it feel like I was pushing a heavy weight. My combined 29 wheel was far heavier than 26 with big tyre even though 29 feels speedy. So I guess a 650 with small tyre is better than a big 26.

It's different with a large vol tyre as opposed to a larger rim and lower vol tyre as you won't get the deflection and squish.
Almost like a 'fatbikelite' on some of the really big ones.
I just posted the bike up as a work in progress as the geometry is going to be rather strange but reckon it will work really well with a few tweaks
