Alrighty folks, forgive me if I'm being stupid... First time buidling a grown up bike since putting my BMX days behind me.

I've bought some Marzochi Z1 ETA's with a 20mm bolt through axle. the problem is that I have got my hands on some 15mm hubs on a set of Mavic 317s.

My question being... Can I run a 15mm axle with some sort of adapter to fit the drop outs on the Z1's? This is a budget bike to replace a stolen one so I really want to avoid spending hundres on new components. A work around just now would be great until I can save up for 20mm wheels, (probably a few months away)

I don't think so, I've never heard of one. What hubs have you got? They might make adapters for them.

What hub is it? Lots of them can be adapted to take 20mm axles by replacing the bits on either side of the hub.

No, you can't get a 20mm axle through a 15mm hole. As others have said, can the hubs be converted?

Not sure on the hub design but thats what I feared. the wheels were a chea deal on eBay with very little information. I'll look tonight and see what I can find out.. here is the wonderful description with the wheels..

"A pair of 26" MAVIC 317 mountain bike wheels, black in colour. Disc brake only.
Selling as upgraded
Note - front hub requires the larger axel, 10mm I believe, There are no markings on the hubs so not sure of make. When I bought them they were listed as Formula hubs, but can't be sure"

I got the pair for 50bucks so was hoping for some quick fix on them to be honest.

Sureley Its possible to have a split adapter to fit into the 20mm Z1 dropouts that will in turn take a 15mm axle designed for the hub?

As there are many adapters out there to adjust the hub diameter I would have thought there would be equally as many drop out adapters? am I being dumb or am I just a being bit too "hit it with a hammer" from back in my BMX building days...

In theory yrs, but it would likely be cost prohibitive.

cheapest solution would be to find a 20mm hub with the same size flanges as your 15mm one and then reuse spokes and rim in a rebuild.

or sell/swap the 15mm wheel and get a 20mm one?

Are you certain they're 15mm hubs? The ad details guess at ten.

pretty sure they are 15s.. just by holding the 20mm axle against them. even still with the hub being smaller than the drop outs this is where it causes problems.

I'll have a proper hunt for "formula hub" adapters, the manufacturers site doesn't make it look hopeful( http://www.formulahubs.com/en/formula/?method=listing&sid=5) but perhaps there is an aftermarket solution.
