Surely, with the potential for mechanical problems, these kind of races can be best two of three, points races.

There was enough controversy when they initially introduced the tech and feed zones.. 'It's not realy mountain biking unless they carry their own tools and fix their own mechanicals' but it has led to better racing.
To make it a best 2 from 3 would mean having to shorten the races to something more like a sprint race unless they run them over several days.. these races are damned hard and the riders are wrecked by the end..
Some events just have a bigger part for luck to play I guess, especially equipment sports.

I love mountain biking, but this I think is far duller to watch than the road race.
