Evening,

Just wondering if anyone knew if there were SPD mounts under the two tabs shown on my boots? I wore them for road biking in the winter, but now MTB in the winter so was hoping I could re-use these boots.

I've started trying to "pop" the insert out without much luck so wondering if there is really nothing under there, but also thinking why would they leave the two "inserts" if they weren't meant to be popped out?

I would try going from inside. If you remove the insole, is there a removable plate? There must be, otherwise there's no way to fit the cleat nut.

You might need to install the plate for the screws to go into. Only problem is if they are Gore-Tex then they are sealed so you will have to cut them to get under the inner sole.

I wouldn't want to be mountain biking in a pair of road shoes. It'll be like walking on ice.

Fair point on the lack of tread

Just don't attempt MTB in those, you'll end up on yer arse. I've got specific road winter boots and MTB boots. Same make (Shimano), same sole, except the MTB ones have tread glued on. The Northwaves may indeed use identical sole templates for road and MTB.

Only way I'd consider doing this is if I used SPDs on a road bike. No way are those soles are suitable for anything where you need to put your foot down/hike/walk on uneven ground, particularly with an exposed cleat.

At a push, they might be ok for perfectly smooth gravel roads/trails...

Nah, you can wiggle and push them in from the outside, i've done it.

Good point on the sole didn’t think of that! Ended up with my as old neoprene shoe covers and it worked out fine as not that cold!

Shimano used to do a converter for 3 bolt to 2 that had pontoons … last saw them on sjs !

in fact … 🙂
